EG civic won't go into gear (AT tranny)
I don't know much about AT trannies but the car starts and everything, but when i go into reverse or drive...NOTHING. feels like somethings not connected on the tranny side, but i'm not exactly sure. another thing is the car won't start unless it's in neutral.
i tried searching, but the search function is down right now and i hardly ever see topics created for AT trannies in the first place.
any chance the tranny could be shot?

Thats odd, because it should be impossible to start up/turn off/ take out keys in any gear other than park.
Have you been doing any Neutral drops?
I would say the tranny is gone.

actually let me rephrase that.
it's not that the car doesn't want to go into gear, it's just that i can slide the handle from reverse to drive to d3 to d2 to d1 and still nothing.

Sounds like the torque converter could be shot, but you probably would have noticed symptoms first if that was the case. Im not sure how much of this info is useful, but before my torque converter blew up, the tach rev'd beyond redline and looked like it would keep going past like 11,000RPM.. then.. basically the car would not move when i pressed the gas and suddenly accelerate peeling out... then eventually, i ended up in ur situation where all those gears didnt do jack nemore...
I'd expect u'd have noticed symptoms first if it was ur torque converter... if u woke up one morning and this happened, sounds more like something electronic related. Hope somebody else might have some better info for u, good luck~

It wont go into park? If thats the case then the shifting mechanism at the console or at the transmission (more than likey here) case is off. They can be adjusted. The transmission is fine for right now but not fixing it soon can burn the trans up. Since it wont go into park it'll only start in neutral. There is a switch that controls that (park-neutral safety switch) so the car can only start in those two gears.

Re: EG civic won't go into gear (greddydelsol)
well, we just bought the car today for my brother and was aware that it didn't go into gear, but for only $900 on a car that i plan on converting to manual anyways i couldn't pass up this offer. i just want it to run good enough to go up the slope into my garage to undergo the 5 speed tranny replacement. like the handle to shift it into gear seems to be really loose. like it's not connected to anything.
