Default ECU upgrading help

I want to DIY an upgrade on my P06 ECU for my D15b7. I have read how to do it in Honda Tuning mag and I have some soldering skills. So I think I can pull it off. But my question is has anyone used the chips specified in the mag or the "ebay equivelent" without using Uberdata or Crome? I was hoping to do the upgrade without spending lots of money on a program I probably couldn't use (computer is in an upstairs apartment and car is in the lot). All your help or thread links is greatly appreciated.

If you don't program the chip it won't do anything

I was under the impression that the chips were pre-programmed.... for example:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...&rd=1

Just wondering if it will work....

Ohh, yes those chips are pre-programmed, but there not gonna do much for you, the best thing you can do is have someone program a chip for your car specifically.

The uberdata program is free, the stuff to chip your ecu runs about $15 from moates.net, then you need a burner to write your program onto the chips, also available from moates.net for about $50.
