Default ECU swap? D16Y5

Hey fellas,

I got a '99 HX recently, and when I bought it there was a CEL set. Codes were for a WBo2, which I replaced. Cleared the codes and the 2 WBo2 codes didn't reappear. However not too long later, another WBo2 code cropped up. I cleared it, it came back.

I had a friend do a search of the Honda tech database, and he found a TSB for '99 HXs. The TSB describes '99 HXs that can throw the code I have but without driveability issues--which is exactly what I have. The solution is to replace the ECU, and they list the P/Ns so I can get bent over and royally screwed by the Honda dealer.

My question is, how swappable are these ECUs? The TSB says if you have ECU # xxx, to order ECU# xxx-rev 1, and lists 3 or 4 potential ECUs. I don't really want to play their game, and have found some 2000 HX ECUs at various Junkyards. I'd like to just swap one of these slightly newer ECUs in (with the hope they fixed whatever problem showed up in the '99s) and be done with it, but don't know that much about how swappable these things might be.

Anyone have any experience. It seems like you guys swap the ECUs on the other D-series stuff without any issues, but I just thought I'd see if anyone knows it can't be done, or if it can.

Thanks for any input!

your 99 will plug into any 99 or 00 P2N. (or 96-98 with OBD2b to OBD2a harness)
I'd bet you have an A32, hence the later replacement.

37820-P2N is the generic HX ECU part number

A21 - 96 manual (OBD2a)
A22 - 97 manual (OBD2a)
A31 - 98 manual (OBD2a)
A32 - 99-00 manual (replaced with the A33) (OBD2b)
A33 - 99-00 manual (OBD2b)
A61 - 98 CVT (OBD2a)

cali spec, no lean burn, no EGR, slightly different fuel/ign mapping
L21 - 96 manual (OBD2a)
L22 - 97 manual (OBD2a)
L31 - 98 manual (OBD2a)
L32 - 99-00 manual (replaced with the A33) (OBD2b)
L33 - 99-00 manual (OBD2b)
L61 - 98 CVT (OBD2a)

Sorry to resurrect, but what is CVT? Also, how can I tell what year vehicle my d16y5 came out of? I bought a car with it already in it and it has the wrong ecu so it runs bad and just wanted to make sure I get one that is compatible with it. Thanks.

Year should be stamped above the exhaust manifold on the head.
CVT is a type of auto trans, specific to the HX model. IIRC.
