ECU and Knock Sensor Combinations
As mentioned in my previous thread, I (sadly) learned the hard way that I bought a 2000 Civ EX, not knowing that it had a Y7 block swap. I have Knock sensor and Idle Malfunction CEL codes on and of course, the CEL inhibits the VTEC, which I know works. I think my idle problem is just a spark plug and wire tune up or a coolant drain but I don't know about my knock sensor. I know I don't have a knock and I haven't checked for the sensor yet, but someone's mentioned that I may not even have one because a Y7 sensor won't work with my Y8 ECU and a Y8 sensor won't work with the Y7 block right? I don't know if it was only for 5th gen civs, but I've seen you can swap a P28 ECU that doesn't check for a knock sensor, thereby eliminating my problem. Is this plausible for my EX? Would I need to do a OBD1 harness swap or is it a plug and play ECU? I don't have Emission check in my county, so emissions aren't a problem. I'd like some info on this subject so i know where to go next...

Re: ECU and Knock Sensor Combinations
With a p28 ECU right? And it'll bypass my knock sensor issue with my Y8 Head swap? Could I leave the p28 virgin or is it a must the minute I put it in to have it chipped? Also, if I do a OBD1 swap, it's just the easy point of swapping the wiring harness for an OBD1 p28 harness? An OBD1 would mean I'd have to begin to do CEL checks manually correct? Sorry for the questions, ECU's are not my forte.

You have a P2E ECU, Why dont you just get a knock sensor, The y7 block has the threads in it but with no knock sensor because those motors didnt come with one. Does the car have an EX harness?

Oh I see how it works. I just buy an obd2 to 1 adapter that plugs straight from the ecu to the ubd2 harness in my civ. A p28 ECU seems like I can just use virgin for a time at least, a tune can come down the road. I have the ability to buy either a new stock p28 or a slightly modified p28 new also. Would either be preferable to my situation? I'm excited to get this done so I can finally get this sensor off and get that much closer to having VTEC back! And also, obd1 seems to be extremely easier to work with.

Oh is that seriously my situation? Y7's didn't come with knock sensors? Yes, everything is EX except for the block. I thought Y7 to Y8 electronics didn't match up, which is why I assumed to use a p28 bypass. But if the only thing I need to do is buy a sensor, I'll probably do that. But wouldn't a p28 swap also give me unlocked ability if I tuned it?

P2P d16y8 ecu and get a knock sensor, thread it in the back of block, towards driverside, right underneath Intake manifold.
It's best to do it right the first time, dont mess with OBD conversion harnesses, mixing OBD ecus. Just get what your car should have.
It sounds like you already have the P2P ecu, since the P2E D16y7 ecu wouldnt throw a code for Knock sensor.

Yeah, Y7s didnt come with a knock sensor but the threads are in the block above the oil filter to the right if your in front of the car. Get a knock sensor for a y8 motor and plug it in. You can buy a P28 and a conversion harness and convert to OBD1 but i dont see a reason for that. Are you gonna boost the motor? Otherwise i see no reason to tune it.

Yes, the car is a y8 EX, so they kept the ECU. And I don't plan on boosting anytime soon or ever so I suppose my best course of action is to buy a sensor and be done with it. I had an idea of where it was but never saw it and it is probably why; it's not there. Thanks!

Thats what i would do. When you get the sensor just be careful the plastic can crack. Its like a 22 or 23mm. Ive gottan them in and out without taking the intake manifold off but its a bitch.

I don't plan on taking my manifold off till I replace it with a BBK series. It's one little threaded sensor, I'll suck it up haha.
