Easy question...
Just wondering if putting too much oil, say like 1 quart over the oil mark, in the engine will mess anything up? Thanks.

way over filling can harm the motor yes but i dont know if 1 liter is considered that. I have a guy here at my work fill his ls with like 10liters (oil was pouring out the top of the V/c), his motor was smoking and spuddering. we drained it and it ran fine. he isnt very smart, we make fun of him everyday still.

So a half quart too much is worse than only having a half quart in the motor? Ha. I think not Trebek.

Blah blah....I mean TOO much. A little over isn't going to do ****, but if you put a full quart+ over, then bad things might happen.

heh, a little, and a quart, a quart is a lot in terms of overfilling. the crankcase only holds about 3.5-4. so if you put 1 quart too much, thats 1/4+ of the capacity.
to put it into perspective, my friend's dad had a 79 chevy 3500, 454 in it. he took it to the shop to have some exhaust work done. he called to find out if it was done, and they told him that it was knocking, so they put some oil in it, but it took i think 7 quarts they put in before it stopped knocking. then it blew up. at idle. he said "hey thats funny, because it never knocked before, and it doesnt even hold 7 quarts of oil."

Define "too much."
I know for a fact that .5 of a quart won't hurt, because I know people that have been dumping all 4 quarts of oil into their D series Civics at oil changes when they only need 3.5 with the filter change. Cars ran fine forever.
Now there was this Civic that came in the day before yesterday here at my shop. It was smoking out of the tailpipe and running sluggishly. We checked the oil first and found oil all the way up the stick - probably had about 7-8 quarts of oil in it!
Changed the oil and gave it the proper 3.5 quarts, and the smoke eventually stopped after what was left in the exhaust burned off.
I guess it'd take a pretty bored person to find out how much is exactly enough to make the engine smoke out the tail pipe, eh?

Here's a thought:
Drain the oil into a gallon jug, then pour half of it in, check the oil, and repeat until the oil level is correct.
Trying to drain "1 quart" will prove to be messy and difficult.

sounds almost identical to the guy at my works story but his excuse was, he didnt know how much oil his teg took so he just filled it until he could see it out the valve cover (like when you fill up with gas). he said it was somewhere in the 9-12 liters area
