almost two and a half times the limit to be a gross polluter. after a tuneup (o2 sensor, cat, plugs, wires, couple tanks of chevron fuel system cleaner) it passed with FLYING colors. CO levels didnt EVEN REGISTER at 25mph. and going 4332 to 12 is crazy!
anyway, just in case anyone is interested. dyno smog test pic

Thats really cool! So the JDM B16a can pass smog, huh? What OBD is your ECU? I wanna drop in a B16 into my EK, and I'm afrain I won't pass the visual inspection.

My motor is like that too. I need to redyno tune it this spring again.
What dyno tuning can do to a motor.

I wish more people knew this. I am tired of the "You cannot smog JDM engines" posts on this place. Drives me nuts.

There have been a few threads by very well respected members even outlining how to pass SMOG with a JDM motor.

thanks, I'll look into it more when the time draws closer. I was just afraid that when they see that the car is a 97 and it has an OBD1 motor and ECU they wont let it pass. I just got a dyno smog check a week ago and they plug the machine directly into the ECU.

I think you are confused. They don't plug directly into the ECU. Never have. They do however make sure the MIL light works and that there are no codes.

i had an SIR-1 that i passed off as a 94 B16a. it passed visual fine, but i couldn't get the NOX down. look at the 15mph NOx #'s. it almost failed. the higher compression on JDM motors makes the NOx output higher.
i bet the major difference was due to the new cat. anyways congrats! just don't get pulled over and your hood popped. since you passed tailpipe, you might as well go the next step and get BAR'd

No, even then they do not plug into the ECU. They plug into the diagnostic port connector. There IS a difference.

you will run into some trouble if you get your hood popped in california, cause the cops will check the engine, and if its not 1 year newer than your car you will get it towed, and will not be able to get it released unless you swap it out at the tow yard. that is what i have been told. however if you go to nevada and get it registered, they can not do anything about it, haha.

it has to be ONE YEAR NEWER EXACTLY? what about 2 years newer? my civic is a 92 so i'm not worried about the engine being newer but i bet its more than 1 year newer

The motor has to be the SAME YEAR OR NEWER. It also has to be setup exactly the way it was in the donor car. so let's say you have an itr motor in your civic, all the necessary smog equipment that was on the itr must be in your civic the same exact way.

Does anyone know if I can pass smog w/ hondata because I was suprised that a lot of people were able too. I want to know where this place is that you went too. I figure I can get my car tuned if I were to go up there.
Edit: I live in Antioch, not that far.

there are loopholes around that. my car currently has a 95 LS in it (its obd1, but the head has a 9|6 cast on it??). when i got it BAR'd, they just put down "1994 Acura Integra 1.8L" on the sticker.
i had also previously tried to BAR my SiR-1 motor, which has a 9|1 cast date on the head. it was converted to look like a US b16a3 with US intake mani and dizzy. i just told the ref it was a 1994 model engine and he took my word for it.
where you might get in trouble is differences between OBD's. if you want to put an obd2 motor in your car (ie b18c-r into an EG), you'll need to run the obd2 ecu and diagnostic port as the b18c-r was an obd2 only motor. also, some obd2 motors look different, ie the obd2 LS has the PCV valve in the valve cover, b16a2 has more vaccum stuff in the intake mani, etc

Yeah, that's what I did when I had my first EH3 with a JDM B16. They didn't notice the difference between the B16 and the Z6 (whic it should have had). So, I got lucky with the visual. As far as the CA SMOG, I didn't pass it until the third try when I finally replaced JUST the cat'. I still had the USDM P28 and the motor was in complete stock OEM condition.

More false information. The engine does NOT need to be the same year or newer. Wanna see my bar sticker for a 92 engine in my 93 hatch?
