Default DX vs. EX transmission

I need to find a new transmission for my '92 DX 4D civic, and I have heard that that the ratios on transmissions from the EX model are different. My engine is basically stock with minor mods, so my question is could I benefit from buying a used EX tranny instead of a DX tranny. I'm looking for better acceleration rather than maintaining fuel economy. Again I don't have a built motor, just stock, and I want it to be more fun to drive. I don't intend to do any major engine work, but I have made significant suspension mods. Will the ratios in the EX tranny hurt performance or help it barring any consideration of fuel economy?

Forget about the entire Z6 swap.

Yes, you can benefit GREATLY if you upgrade to a D16Z6 transmission. If you can find one, get a D16Y8 unit (1996-2000). They bolt right up, have the same gear ratios, BUT have stronger shift forks.

The OBD doesn't have anything to do with the tranny.

I'm not worried about the ECU, I just need to replace my tranny and want advice as to what model I should look for that might upgrade the one that came in my 92 DX sedan, whether it be more durable hardware or different gear ratios...

What the HELL are you talking about? The D16Y8 1996-2000 units bolts up to any 1992-2000 D-Series block REGARDLESS if it's OBD1 or OBD2.

Do you even know what OBD is?

well if you can get the z6 tranny for cheap then go for it.

But like dimi says, if you can save up a little more and buy the y8 tranny you have the added benefit of stronger **** forks

Yeah, nothin' like better **** forks, lol! Also, any recommendations for rebuilt transmissions? I live in Portland, OR, and want a warrantied rebuild. I can do the swap, but I won't try to rebuild the one I have...

sorry, i thought he was talking about the entire engine, which u would have to swap out ecus, unles u got an obd2-obd1 conversion harness, but if u just gonna get the tranny, then z6 or y8 will do fine, the y8 has a tad bit shorter gears (i believe)

get an ex/si tranny. shorter final drive and shorter gears. A friend did this tranny swap and he gained 1/2 second in the quarter on a stock d15b7.

Shorter gears, faster accelration... not to mention the cx tranny is weak...

si/ex tranny is the way to go for faster times...

Every D-Series transmission whether is be CX/VX/DX/LX/EX/Si/ etc... are all Hydraulic operated.

D16Y8 is the engine code, nothing to do with transmission operation (cable or hydraulic).

How is the condition of the transmission? ANY grinds from ANY gears? Where in Texas are you...might be kind of near.
