Not a stupid ? at all. I used to have a helluva time with it. Once you get the clip off (the metal clip across the back) turn on the headlights for a couple minutes to get them warmed up. Then you can pull them out much easier. I ended up shattering a bulb in my hand trying to yank them out cold. I also did'nt reinstall the silver clips across the back of the bulbs. The rubber boot is stiff enough that the bulb does'nt move IMHO.

First, pull the rubber boot back, and you will see a small metal clip across the back. One side of it has a screw in it, and the other side will just pop striaght up. I can't remember if it's the inside or the outside that's got the screw on it though.

He was probably grabbing it and trying to get a good enough grip to yank it out of the socket when he gripped it too much and shattered it.
