Well with the right speakerset-up you just need the two fronts and a sub in the back. All depends on what type of sound your looking to get.

hmm...if you have subs in that back..then i dont think you would need rear speakers. I chose to get speakers in the rear instead of subs..and I simly love it. Either way...it will sound great in a hatch.

Exactly, hatchs don't require a lot for it to pound.A good setup 10" will sound better in a HB than a 2dr/4dr with 2 12".I can vouch for that.

My '92 DX Hatch has rear speakers, and I doubt it had ever been modified by its previous owner. Are they stock? The speakers themselves are aftermarket, but so are the door speakers.

Okay he aked a question, and nobody has really answred the question. Everyone is just suggesting other stuff rather than explaining the deal with the rear speakers.
Rear speakers were not stock on hatchbacks. There was a dealer installed option that included rear speakers, the mounting brackets, and grilles. Again it was not stock from the factory, but many cars received the rear speakers from the dealers before they ever hit the lot for sale.
If you want the rear speakers grilles and mounting hardware you'll need to scour your junkyards, because they are no longer available through the dealers.
If you're looking for the rear speakers, etc. then simply look for the slotted inserts in the rear plastic trims.
Good luck.
