Default duct tape to cover axle boot

first off car is a 99 em1

when I installed a new pass. side axle, i ended up putting a hairline crack on the boot

the crack was caused by me tapping the axle into the hole in the brake disc, it didnt want to just slide in, so I had to tap it in, it was already inside on the tranny end.. I used a rag and folded it up thick to help absorb the shock, used a hammer to hold it in place, and used another hammer to tap it in, but i ended up putting a hairline crack on the boot, at different spots (didnt tap it all at one spot)

is there a better way to slide the axle in the brake disc? i had to come up with something...

would duct tape help stop or slow down the crack on the boot? sounds ghetto, but I just bought this **** and I dont want to replace it again lol

No, duct tape will not do anything. Do it right and replace it.

I need to be more careful when I replace mine... I beat the **** out of them off and on the hubs. I've never had a problem though... knock on wood!

you can buy a replacement boot for cheap and it's not hard to replace, just make sure you have a lil axel grease to pack in there... Problems only arise once it opens, and NO duct tape would not work, nice thought though. Shouldn't cost you more than $10 and 1 hour.

Do it the right way and get the boot replaced. I cant see duct tape doing much if any good in that situation with all of the movement going on there.

on a side note, i noticed its SOOOOO much easier to put the axle into the hub if you clean both splines - on the axle and the female part of the hub with wd40 or something. Clean it out good and it slides in like butter. I kno because my driver side one was hammered in cause it was dirty. My pass side one i took the time to clean and it was so smooth going in.

^^i never thought of that. i did spray wd40 after it was already halfway in not prior...

i'm not really comfortable replacing the axle boot... i mean i have to take that **** apart, hella grease, **** that lol...

i got the axle from autozone, so i might just get a replacement from them through their warranty

late!

Atleast you're getting it done right, be thankful for that. It'll save you from getting into problems down the road.

When my boot went bad, I went to autozone for the "speedi-boot" which was about 10 dollars. Re-greased it, sealed it and off I went. No leaks going on 6 months now.
