Dry cell batteries....are they any good?

Dry cell batteries....are they any good?
I bought one last summer...and forgot to disconnect it during the winter.
Now its dead and im told I have to buy a charger to fix it...
(I've tried boosting it and all, car started, ran for half an hour, turn key off, and bam dead again, engine wont even turn over ...)
Should I get a charger or are these batteries ****? What kind of battery should I go with?
PS: I got a pretty heavy system...
