I just replaced the drums. Shoes. And all the springs and not when I brake I hear a slight thumping noise from the back end? I looked and everything is correct and the parts were brand new. The car stops excellent. Should I worry about it? Are the new parts just working in?


I noticed that if I'm going down the road and I use the e brake to slow down I hear the thumping noise as all speeds and the noise speeds up when I go faster and slows down when I am going slow.

I adjusted them accordingly and the e brake works very well aswell. Just that thumping noise is worrying me

It is a 99 civic lx sedan also

Did you buy the brakes from Autozone? I did once and had the exact problem, then I bought them from the dealer and problem solved.

when you changed the shoes, what were the condition of the previous ones? how was the drum surface?

do you only hear the thumping or does it also cause vibration in the car or the pedal?

the previous shoes were smooth, just worn a lot..
the drum surface was smooth not egged or marked...

i spent 50 a peice for these drums.. cant return em now =[

no vibration just the noise..

i cant get it to recreate the sound when spinning by hand

nothing comes to mind

just make sure your wheels are properly torque,

like everyone said make sure all metal to metal points are lubed, including the spring points, the backing plate the drums contact,

and make sure the starwheel adjuster operates smoothly, i cant recall for civics but normal dual servo drum brakes self adjust by braking in reverse

if you do ever decide to try and fix it. experiment with it. you've pretty much hit a wall now until we can get some more info (AKA any awkward operation when you work with it

Just curious, did you ever figure this out? I'm having the same problem on my 02 Accord. Replaced my brakes with all new Wagner drums, shoes, and hardware kit. Had the thumping and thought maybe I got a bad set of shoes or drums so I exchanged everything and did it again. Same problem still! Just wondered if they maybe wore in or if you had to do something to fix it? Thanks!

Thumping from drum brakes is usually caused by worn out brake hardware, or improperly adjusted shoes. When you replaced your shoes, did you replace the hardware? Did you properly adjust the shoes?
