Default Re: drum brake shoes replace HOW TO? (turboD16)

Now I am assuming that they are Honda shoesthat are on the car. First, before removing anything, clean the brake assembly with brake cleaner. Push down on the retainer spring with a screwdriver, then turn the tension pin to align with the slot in theretainer spring, the spring should just pop off, repete on other spring. Now pull assembly away from the backing plate. Unhook the lower return spring. now pull back on the parking cable with a pair of sidecutters (they work best), unhook the cable from the parking brake lever. Swing the parking brake lever away from the trailing shoe, this will force the adjuster bolt clevis out of it's groove in the shoe; the two shoes can now be separated. Remove the adjuster from the leading shoe. pry open the parking brake retaining clip and separate the lever from the shoe. now put the new new trailing shoe on the lever, place wave washer over pin then put on retaining clip and crimp the ends together. Clean the adjuster bolt and clevis, lube the threads with high temp grease. Connect the adjuster lever spring to the leading shoe then insert the pin on the lever into the hole on the shoe. insert the short clevis of the adjuster bolt into the slot of the leading shoe, make sure it makes catches the self-adjuster lever. Connect the upper return spring between the two shoes, pry the lower ends of the shoes apart and insert the clevis into the slot in the shoe. Luubricate the contact areas on the backing plate . reinstall the parking brake cable. Place brake shoe assembly against backing plate, engaging the upper ends of the shoes into the slots in the wheel cylinder. Connect the lower return spring between the shoes. With the shoes in position, pass the tension pins through the holesin the backing plate and shoes, then install the retainer spring. Make sure the lower return spring and theparking brake cable spring are seated behind theanchor plate. have the drums machined, or at the very least remove the glazing rom the surfacewith sand paper in a swirling motion. Now adjust the brake shoes untill you have a slight drag on the drum.
Hope this helps.
