Check the VRS (I think thats what its called) that plugs into the Transmission. Make sure its fully in. If it is, may need to replace it. Worst case scernario is getting a new Speedo, but your VRS Sensor is the most likely culprite.

VSS* its the vehicle speed sensor. several things can go bad with them and this is one of them replace it. most likley it will be on the firewall side of the trannys case standing straight up in the air. it will be held in by a bolt i believe two so dont go ripping at it.

Re: my speedo has an attitude problem
try another cluster, pull out vss (vehicle speed sensor and clean it thoroughly with brake cleaner, that's what fixed mine up a good clean with brake cleaner.

I'd start by checking the VSS. Its either the top part with the connector thats bad (18 bucks on ebay, thats what it ended up being on my sol), or the bottom part with the gear in it.
If the above two fail, then try the cluster, as its the most expensive. ($75-$100)

Mine did the exact same thing, multiple known good VSS's didn't fix it. Replaced speedo (i opted to not replace the whole cluster, just parted out an auto cluster) and it fixed it perfect.

If you get water on the sensor, coolant or whatever it'll mess up.
If your car dies out and doesn't want to start again, it'll most likely be because of your icm.

Re: my speedo has an attitude problem
I had this EXACT problem with mine. Turns out the plug on the wiring harness had some corrosion on it. Cut it off, wired up a new one and it works fine now. Check that before you go spending lots of money.
