dohc zc into an ek
 

i want to put an 88-91 jdm dohc zc motor into my ek.....

i have a few questions..

1) does a sohc tranny bolt to a dohc crx zc motor?
2) what computer do/can i use with this?
3) same mounts?
4)what axels do i use?
5) what harness do i use?
6)where is the best place to buy a jdm motor from?

you can put that motor in, but someone correct me if im wrong, the best way to do it is use all the parts off the ek. like the exhaust mani. the im and all the sensors and whatnot. basicaly all you need is just the block and head. and just retain your old computer, unless you have vtec, then you need to switch over to a non-vtec ecu. yes your d tranny will bolt to the zc. it should all be the same mounts. i did this swap in my 95 lx 4dr that i had. and thats what i did. the whole swap only took me about 3.5-4 hours. so im pretty sure its the same for an ek. like i said, someone correct me if im wrong.

def. obd1 though right? so i would have to get a conversion pigtails for my obd2 harness..and just leave the vtec connectors off the motor right?...ive done swaps b4 just never a zc dohc swap its new 2 me

I'm not trying to discourage you, but why do you want to put the ZC into an EK? It would be much easier to do the D16Y8 or even the D16Z6 w/ OBD1 conversion than the ZC (which is OBD0).

If you really doing this to be different and have the hard headedness to pursue, a good thing to know is that the later transmission (Y8 tranny would be my suggestion) will bolt up and allow you to use the same axles as in your current car.

can i run that motor with an obd1 setup? i want to do this dohc swap cause i want to turbo it. its easier to turbo than a b series motor (with a home made turbo kit) and its alot stronger that a single cam turbo setup

What makes you think that the DOHC D series turbo would be "alot stronger" than a SOHC D turbo? Actually, it'll probably be much cheaper to make hp with the sohc due to parts availability/price than the older dohc. There are several folks with sohc turbos making some nice numbers -

yeah i know but the dohc starts out with more hp and better toqure plus my single cam is going in my hatch with a turbo on it so i wanted to do a dual cam in my coupe.... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

It starts out with a little more, but not enough to go through the wiring trouble IMO.

Still, I like the old dohc d and it would be neat seeing one in a 6th gen (especially boosted).

As far as what OBD to run, the engine that you spec'd is OBD0. They did make an OBD1 dohc d, but it is very rare. I'm sure that more than likely it (OBD0 engine) could be made to work with OBD1 electronics, but I am no expert there.

so there basically is no reason to switch it from obdo to obd1? and if i leave it obdo how would my dash harness plug in? do i need to hard wire it and make a conversion harness?

I would say scrap the idea...too much work and wiring.
I have an OBD1 DOHC Zc in my hatch,i'm happy with it,but it was a direct bolt up for my hatch.
I would say since your dealing with an Ek,go with something at least OBD1.

The intake manifold has a different bolt pattern than the rest of the d series engines so you just can't go bolt on a y8 manifold. Plus you'd have to rewire everything from OBD2 to OBD0 and wire the dist different since the cam angle sensor is located outside of the dist. It's too much of a hassle to just get the DOHC's and not worth it. Plus it's almost rated exactly the same as a y8. Why get an old out of date engine when you can get something more newer and realiable with a bigger selection of parts(yeah I realize that the ZC can use d-series stuff but still). I had two(the first threw a rodand the second was just to get rid of the car to sell and not have to rewire the a6 back in) in my CRX and would of taken a y8 or y6 anyday over that ZC. Just my .02

yes and no i want a b18b but i also found a obd1 zc im just thinking how on the zc all my single cam parts (intake man, exhaust man, tranny) they all bolt up to the zc if i buy a b18b then i have to buy the million dollar tranny to go with it and its just alot of cash.....i think i could do more with the zc looking at it money wise......but if money wasent an option i would definatly get the b18

zc goes in the same as a b18 you use all the mounts from the civic except the driver side mount (but i believe on the zc you do actually use that mount)

i dont know about new york, but in texas you have to swap a motor that is the same year or newer. just thought i would mention this...

88-91 zc and teg d16a1 (1st gen zc) tranny bolt pattern is different than other d series, it requires 2 holes to be modified, one to be egged out and one to be drilled and tapped. There is a writeup about it on redpepperracing.com 2nd gen obd1 zc tranny bolt pattern is the same though.

The OBD1 DOHC Zc,drops right into a 5th gen Civic.No fabricating mounts or anything. I have a z6 tranny mated to it. For hte price and what i wanted out of my car,it was a perfect swap,plus i just wanted to be different,(since they are kinda rare), and when i pop the hood ppl just think it is a b18.

well thats another reason i like them they are rare and not too much $. so what tranny bolts right up to it no mods? i dont want to have to drill and tap and all that shit...i already have enough wiring to do to get it into my EK

Any z6 or y8 tranny bolts up to the OBD1 DOHC Zc.
Like i said ,for my 5th gen i have a z6 tranny mated to it.
