Re: dohc or sohc? (curtissays)

If it's stock, it's a SOHC engine. D16Y8 SOHC VTEC.

B16Drag 09-16-2004 10:44 PM

should be on the valve cover. but if yours is an ex it is a sohc vtec

Re: dohc or sohc? (curtissays)

I dont think they say VTEC on them but I could be wrong, I know mine doesnt and its the same engine just its in my 96 coupe. Just says HONDA on it.

Re: (B16Drag)

sweet, thanks for the help i appretiate it. also, do you if its possible to adjust the timing with a timing light yourself?

if it's vtec it says on the valve cover if everything stock ;-)

A lot of EX Civic's don't have VTEC on the valve cover...

curtissays 09-16-2004 10:53 PM

Re: (GetawayinMoscow)

alright, does anyone know if you can adjust the timing yourself?

B16Drag 09-16-2004 10:54 PM

yea just adjust the distributor but make sure you use a timing gun and know what your stock setting is supposed to be.. i believe most stock hondas are around 16 but look it up

Re: (curtissays)

look a couple inches under the valve cover, on the front face of the block, there is a 2" stamp that has a number like d16y8, thats your engine. Look for that, then use the search button.

Re: (yanta)

yep...y8 valve covers don't have vtec written on them, only way to tell from y7's is the solenoid.

btw....does anyone know the stock timing on a y7? is it the same as the y8?

y8=SOHC https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

and it does not say vtec on the valvecover, but if its an ex you have vtec

only some sohc 94 ex's have vtec on the valvecover

egisk09 09-17-2004 06:02 AM

all ex models r sohc

H22TurboHatchEG 09-17-2004 06:09 AM

Re: (egisk09)

to figure it out if you dont know about codes and shit just pop the hood and look to the right of the head and look on the side if it has two cam gears its dohc and if it has one its sohc or just look at it if it looks wider than usual than its dohc https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

DemostheneZ 09-17-2004 06:44 AM

Re: (H22TurboHatchEG)

on the valve cover if the sparks are facing away it's non vtec, if it's facing towards you it's vtec.

thats not true. example: d16y7

the easiest way to tell if an engine has vtec just by looking at it, is to look for the vtec solenoid (sp?). it is located just behind the valve cover all the way to the left (on your d16y8. its in a slightly different spot on the dohcs)

shorty0o29 09-17-2004 07:17 AM

Re: (lj17)

unless your civic is a si its not going to be dohc. All other civic came with a sohc engine...ex's were vtec, most others came non-vtec stock

B18C5-EH2 09-17-2004 07:20 AM

Re: (shorty0o29)

92-93 SOHC VTEC engines did not say VTEC on the valvecover.
94-95 SOHC VTEC engines did say VTEC on them.
96-00 SOHC VTEC engines did not say VTEc on them.

Why are you wanting to adjust the timing? Do you mean the timing in terms of moving the distributor, or the timing in terms of the cam and crank timing which means messing with the timing belt. the timing belt timing being off will make a car run like total shit.

jdm123 09-17-2004 10:05 AM

Re: (B18C5-EH2)

if you have the right engine in it, it will say d16y8 and it'a sohc vtec
