As if those reaons weren't enough, yes, it will hurt gas mileage. Your O2 sensor(s) will foul in short order and the computer won't know how much fuel to meter so you'll end up running progressively richer and richer.
Test pipes give you like .3hp anyhow. Don't get one.

Honestly man, your in cali, just get a high flow cat.
Unless if your going turbo i dont see a reason to use a test pipe.

Re: does a test pipe affect gas mileage? (93ejay1)
thats still pretty much stock im talking about upgrades like a turbo sumpercharger something that requires faster flow of the exhaust gases..a cat back with a header isnt nearly enough save your 20$ and go to lunch

What Slow_Cvc means is that if you dont have a reason to release exhaust out faster then you have no reason to run without a cat.
Keep the cat.

It was way louder and gas sucked. White smoke came out of my exhaust too. But I had fun though with my test pipe.

i dunno where u guys are getting your information, with a test pipe, you actually get better gas mileage, maybe not noticeable, but you do. Reason is there is less resistance in your exhaust flow, and as a result, the engine is put at a slightly lower load on the engine.. which results in a slight increase in gas mileage. I've had test pipes and cat, and i do notice it... very slightly.

your exhaust only flows as well as its weakest point. Don't bother with a test pipe on stock exhaust. it probably is only .3 hp gain on a stock setup. if you have a good header and cat back exhaust, then it may be worthwhile. IMO, don't even consider it if you live in cali.

where do you get your info from? the reason gas mileage is worse is because the o2 is reading differently than it would with a cat, so the ecu thinks it needs to add more fuel. it has nothing to do with the load on the engine.

Re: does a test pipe affect gas mileage? (IHateJDM)
you get better gas mileage.. yr o2 sensor is positioned right before the cat, so it won't affect the o2 sensor much, if any at all. Would you agree that a free flowing (new) cat would give you better gas mileage than one that is clogged? and a test pipe flows better than a new cat. In terms of the o2 sensor, it won't care if you have a cat or not, but how well it flows.
i have a test pipe on my civic with a stock gsr motor, and i routinely get 300 miles per tank.. so in that sense, it's definately not hurting my gas mileage.

hmm its OBVIOUS it will, just headers will decrease you mph, mine dopped almost 3 mhp, well with my test pipe i guess it is 3. BUT anyway you will feel increase in power, but as I said exchange power for fuel GL on decision!
