Does anyone know why manufactures do not use split rear main seals?

Default Does anyone know why manufactures do not use split rear main seals?

...since they are easier to replace? I have an older truck that uses split rear main seals, and its cake replacing. Why did the manufacturers on modern cars go to a full seal, which requires you to pull the tranny?

because they have tendency to leak, most modern cars have 150k and are still doing fine.
