Do you think I bent my valves?
Fellow forum members,
Here's the situation.....I was sittin at a stop light, and my RPM's were a little about 100, then it just dropped down to like 50, then my car just died.....I already checked it out, and I need a new timing belt and water pump while im at it. My question is to you is.....Do you guys think I bent my valves? Since I wasn't even moving anyway, and I didn't have the gas pedal down, it was at idle......so if i just slap on a new timing belt would I be okay?

So you're saying that you were just sitting there whn your timing belt broke? If that's the case they probably didn't get bent but there's only one way to find out and that is to check it.

Best way would be to use compression tester after you are done with the new timing belt. If the compression tester shows normal or strong compression, the valves are O.K. If it shows NO compression or whatsoever, then your valves are probably bent, then you will need to take out cylinder head to replace valves. (by the way, it would not start at all if no compression.)
(don't ever do the compression test without timing belt on.)

With 180k miles on it that could be any # of things....
....my recommendation would be to first perform a leak down and compression tests!

Best thing is to just check it, I had a buddy who was driving on the highway going about 65 mph and no bent valves. So I guess it's your luck.

Put on a new belt and try to do a leak down test. It will tell you what and when is leaking.

Re: Do you think I bent my valves? (93egsi)
So am i correct in assuming that the caR runs fine at higher RPMs....? If this is so then bent valves could very well be your problem. The valves in honda motors are so light and flexible that at higher RPMs they have enough speed to seat correctly. Its at a lower RPM range or idle that you will notice fluxuation in RPMs spurgin up and down, usually almost wanting to staul and shut off at its lowests points!
You could have Bent valves...
Burnt Valve seats.....
You could need new valve guides....
those are just a couply of things that i ran into when i had a similar problem as the one you are describing.

The test itself will determine if there is leakage at all....if you dont know how to perform a leak-down or compression test there is lots of info in the archives

you won't be able to do it yourself unless you got a compressor in your house, and a leak down tester. I suggest having a shop doing it.
If I was you I would just try to get a use d and swapping it in.

Just slap a t-belt on the mother. I have done plenty of broken t-belts and just threw on a t-belt for shitz and giggles and BAM it worked prefect.

once your RPMs are higher while driving do you notice the caR running poorly though? Or is it just at lower RPMs that you notice a difference in the way it runs?

i noticed it in the lower RPM's and when i hit the gas kinda hard when i downshift and accelerate, i would feel it bog a little
