Do I really need to replace my oil pan? (pix)
So I just bought this 97 civic DX beater. I went to change the oil today, and low and behold, the oil pan is pretty dented. I have a feeling the last owner wasn't too aware of this. Anyhow, i had driven the car a good...300 ish miles before the oil change today. The car has been running just fine. Do I really need to go and replace the oil pan? How many bolts hold the oil pan on, i didn't take a close look but it seems to run across the car (Somewat), like the pan seems long and might be a pain to drop w/o removing other stuff. Here are some pix

Man, that pan is pretty fucked up. I would replace it just for ***** sake. It doesnt look like the oil pickup/strainer is affected but I just wouldn't want something looking like that on my car.
I just did a new pan in my 92', all you need to do is take off the header and just zip those pan bolts/nuts out and replace.

Changing the oil pan is a pretty straight foward task. I would look around at a junkyard for one and see about getting one that way. You should be able to find one pretty cheap.

It will eventually start to rust and fail on you. I would replace it or at the very least take it off and have it repainted to ensure no rust starts.

If its not leaking, besides the gasket. I would just take it off and hit with a hammer on the inside. Just make sure to use a piece of wood too absorb some of the impact. This will help you make it even. Just lay it on a work bench and work your majic.

wow the motor i just bought had a bad dent in the oil pan, i thought it was really bad. Yours is definitely worse, and if ur car still runs ok, then i guess i dont have to sweat about getting a new oil pan right away.

Or just replace it. I think he would be better in the long run to replace it. If he tries to 'hammer' it out, it can cause the metal to get weaker even if the peice of wood is present. Just save yourself the time and replace it.

Mine has looked almost as bad as that since I got the motor 2 years ago. It must have happened on the boat ride over. No problems except that it doesn't hold as much oil as it should. Seriously, if I fill it according to spec, I have to drain some off.
I would get a H brace first, then replace it. Hmmm... maybe I'll do that.

I'd just get a new one. You can do the whole project in an hour so. Just make sure you seal it good with Honda bond if you do so.
