That's a VTEC block but that's not a VTEC intake manifold. Look for a stamp somewhere just above the header flange, should be a P08 or P2"something" I forget the last letter on that one.

Even easier than trying to find (and translate) the head code, look for a VTEC solenoid. Don't see one? Boom, you don't have VTEC. Don't believe that? Find your ECU. Is it a VTEC ECU?

Replace the head, replace the ECU, and run a couple wires.

This kind of basic stuff is all in the FAQ's sticky. Read before posting.

making it vtec wouldnt be worth the time or effort unless you get all parts for free.

My hunch was that the OP didn't fully grasp what's what but the head code is easily distinguishable which is why I suggested looking for that instead.

I would agree though that if you know what the solenoid looks like and where its located then all you gotta do is check for it.

The only difference between a D16Y7 and Y8 short block is the stamp on the block. The difference is all in the top end. The PO had the short block replaced with a rebuilt one. Your top end is Y7. If your VIN has "EJ6" as the 4th, 5th and 6th characters it should have Y7. If "EJ8" it should have a Y8.

Don't bother looking for a VTEC solenoid. There is no place for it to go on that intake manifold.

For reference, this is a Y8 top end.

I think they are saying look to see if there is a vtec solenoid mounted on the intake... if there you have vtec if not you dont.

The solenoid is on the head though, at least I thought it was.

You're right, right below the PCV inlet, I was thinking IACV my bad. Might still be there but Why would they not keep the Y8 intake on a full swap?

Yeah thought you made a typo or something, just wanted to correct since OP is new to hondas.

Could be on there if previous owner only got the head and not a new intake manifold, not sure if they are compatible though and there would be ECU problems.

OP, I would honestly not worry about making it a vtec. Do the regular maintenance then swap out for a bigger DOHC motor.

Did you look to see if it had a solenoid? It's very possible to put that manifold on a Y8 engine.

Yes your VIN says it CAME with a D16Y7 but it can never ever tell you what you actually have. I'm not even sure what the rest of your sentence is trying to say.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_D_engine

A D16Y8 is a VTEC IF it has a D16Y8 head and ECU. Like I said there is no difference between the Y7 and Y8 blocks it's the head that makes the difference. Just because the block is a Y8 doesn't determine whether the head and ECU are VTEC.

I'm about to do "Mini-me" conversion which is a Y8 (or Z6) VTEC head, intake and ECU on D16Y7 block which pretty much makes it the same engine.

If the previous owner needed a rebuild and located a Y8 short block instead of a Y7 block and kept the Y7 head (a reverse "mini-me") it would essentially still be a Y7.

You could locate a Y8 head, etc and put it on your block and have full Y8 if you don't already have one. If you do have Y8 head you probably would want to put on the matching intake manifold.

He doesn't. You'd be able to see the top of the solenoid from his posted picture.

Actually you can't. I thought you might be able to as well but it's under the PCV intake tube. My pic doesn'thave a solenoid installed yet. Here is a pic I found that shows it very well.

Here's a couple of Y8s I found in classified adds. You can't quite make out the solenoid at that angle and it is more direct angle than the OP.
