Default Do I have VTEC?

hey guys, I have a 1998 honda civic cx hatch with a d16v7 motor inside. I was just curious if I have vtec. I tried looking on google and it's saying that it doesn't come with it. BUT, I'm almost 100% certain that I have a vtec solenoid. Another thing is, it has 4 gears (yes its auto..) anyways. 4 gears, I shift through all 4 then I gun the gas and get a big surge!

One more thing. Is this bad?
And how do I fix that? New dipstick?

Thanks for everything HT!!

Sorry if I wasn't clear with where the "solenoid" is located. Here is a better picture. Thanks!

A D16V7 or a D16Y7? There was no such thing as a V7 and the Y7 is non-VTEC. And that is NOT a VTEC solenoid.

Ahh, I get it now. Does the oil grime build up seem bad and anything about the grime near the tranny dipstick?

Clean it off. Watch for any leaks after.

Indeed, 110% right. I did one on my car, ill never think about It again. More headaches than its worth, and I didnt even notice a gain. The tranny however, is a nice add.

Oil can appear around the dipstick from combustion gasses getting into the crankcase. (You're oil rings or compression rings might need to be looked at.) There is also some crankcase pressure thing that will cause that if it is stopped up.

I bought a 92 Civic Ex 4dr with a D16Z6. Didn't think it was VTEC but i was wrong haha. Granted its a 4dr i don't ever feel the VTEC kick in. Manual 5 speed and the whole car is bone stock. Great car but eventually i want to do a head swap. keep the VTEC but hopefully get a DOHC head on it.. but im not sure if thats even possible without changing the harness and or computer.

Also ewilliams1990 you need to replace the distributor o-ring. just replaced it on my civic and waited until the heater hose on my f22 blew to replace it. the oil rots the rubber.

Thats not possible bud. You cant swap a b series head on any d series block and you cant put a dohc d series on a z6 block. Keep your head, its not bad. Or swap if you really want the dohc

I would get a new dipstick. The rubber shrinks over time and they get loose in the hole. Also it may need a distributor sub assembly looking at the pics of that oil leak. Just make sure that heater hose under the distributor is not swollen from the oil soaking it and about to bust

97. So the d16z6 i know is VTEC didn't know that i couldn't swap the head. I obviously want to keep the but don't want the headache of doing a full engine swap. Thanks for the knowledge!

bro if your civic isnt your daily then get a b series, not as big of a headache as you think if you got tools, garage (self storage unit to fit car). It's a great learning experience.

Yeah and since it's an automatic I wouldnt mod anything in it at all.If you're trying to get something aggressive I would sell the car and get a DOHC.
