DIY suspension question...
 

I currently have sprint springs on my car. I just recently purchased skunk2 coilovers. Do I really need a spring compressor to take them off? Any suggestions in how to do it would help..

If you still had your stock springs then yes but you have aftermarket springs and probably won't need a spring compressor.

When I used to have my stock spring on, me and one of my friends took it out and replaced it with coilovers without the use of a compressor. The method we used was if we dont' want your spings.

A method we used was jack up the car, heat up the spring really well with a flame welder until it gets red soft. Then bang it with a hammer several times until it break.

Just pull your strut/shock out after taking off the bolts from top and bottom, step on the spring and use a wrench to take the top nut off. It will pop off under your feet.

I did this on my rear suspension last weekend without any problems. I even pushed down as hard as I could, and was able to get my springs back ON after I replaced the strut with an aftermarket shock.

With the coilover, you can also get them on, I had skunk2's on my last car and worked with them without any tools besides an impact and wrench.

Yes, you should use a spring compressor to be safe.

this is by far the safest way to do it without a spring compressor...the nut on top that you use to pull the strut apart so you can take the spring off, just take that off while the car is sitting on the ground, then jack the car up and off the spring comes, and if it shoots off its going to go straight up to the hole where the top piece of the strut is


thats the way my autotech teacher taught us when our spring comopressor was broken

spring compressor is a waste of money i think. there really is no need for it because it will come off without it. just put a towel over the shock/spring and loosen the bolt

just be safe and get the spring compressor. its not that expensive to rent

rent it from autozone...26 dollar deposit...return it get your 26 dollars back

I got mine for $12 shipped off ebay. I don't really think that's a waste of money. Plus I had to use them to put my lowering springs on the front because they were still not short enough for me to just put the nut on.

If you go to Auto Zone (ricer store) you can rent a spring compressor with a down payment. Then when you bring it back they give you your money back.
