Default DIY mileage roll back 96-00 Civic.

Sorry guys. I don't feel it's necessary to do this unless you have a reason so I deleted my instructions.

It's not hard to do regardless.. just inspect the cluster and work with it carefully. You'll figure it out with time..

If there are any questions, please post in the thread and I'll try to work them out with you.

I have no clue how to do this to different clusters.. just 96-00 Civic for now.

92-95 is similar but I removed the entire speedo mechanism,
then carefully pried the metal rod out of its melted-plastic-yoke.,
and that released the entire gear/odometer unit.
then I had to pull a washer at one end away from the numbr rings, and I was able to roll each ring back to zero.
then I pushed the washer back on tightly so the rings were all held tightly to one another, and reassembled it all.
pretty simple really.

let me ask you this... do the numbers spin freely of each other? kinda like a lock combo? so if you just wanted to remove 100k miles off the odometer, you could?

There is an easier way. Just swap the odometer assembly.

I know all the 96-00 odometer assemblies are the same, just the cover is different.

I figured out how to roll back odometers the other day with an old cluster I had laying around.

I would suggest just swapping the assembly though, it would be easier, and you won't break anything.

The faces of some guages are different...Like the Si and Ex for example. To remove the odometer from the face you must remove the needle, which is not an exact science. They are broken very easily. I would recommend just rolling back the mileage.

I said you need to swap the cover. I just took a pliers, and yanked the needle assembly off. Worked fine more then once without breaking anything.

And if you did break the needle, you can pull the needle and needle acuator out of your old cluster, I guarantee you won't break both.

Yep.. but you shouldn't take off 100k if that's what you want to do. I think I may have opened up a few fraud cases with this.

lol. Sure there's going to be people misusing this as there always are, but it's good info to those dx people who really do need it.

sure you could take the needle and actuator out of the old one, unless you bought an si cluster and you have a dx. SI needle=red dx or cx=white color combination=

Eh.. illegal much?

I think the intent of this post was so people can upgrade their gauge cluster and keep the correct milage. Not to roll down the milage of their vehicle.

I take more pride that my car is 12 years old, the body has over 200,000 miles on it, and there still is no sign of rust anywhere. You just have to know how to wear those miles proudly!

i would like to know how to do this too. i wish the instructions were still here....

i might get a cluster from an EM1 for my EJ8, and the mileage from the EM1 is about 7000 more than my car. i want to roll it back just to match my current mileage, that is all. i heard that honda dealerships will do this, but i never heard anything concrete..

^^^ yes, i actually just got off the phone with a honda dealer and they said no go. they said it was illegal and they won't tamper with the cluster.

i guess i'll just leave the mileage on the new cluster as is (because i don't really want to screw with it that much), and just record the exact miles that it is off by.

i suppose i could always put my stock cluster back in for a long trip or something. in other words, run the car 7000 more miles with the stock cluster, until i get up to the mileage of the new one...

WELL DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What our dealership does is place an order for a odometer assembly and we take the exact mileage on your car and order a new one with that milage on it (this is a Infinity dealer). If you put another cluster out of anohter car you are required by law to get a sticker, write the old mileage and the new milage on it and put it in your door jam to tell that the milage has been tampered with.

like i said, no one told me for sure that the dealer would do it, so i figured i'd call just for the hell of it to see what they had to say.

they told me about the sticker that goes in the door jamb, however i asked what they do when they order new ones and they said that new speedo assemblies are set at zero. so i guess honda cant get them 'pre-set' like infinity can. oh well, that dosen't concern me anyway. i'll probably just record the amount of miles the clusters are off by and leave the new one alone...
