DIY: lightweight stock del sol hood
Ok, so I was bored and it was a nice day so I decide to tinker with the sol a little. I saw a couple pics of people that have just cut out most of the skeleton on their stock hood. I tried to search and find out how much actual weight this lost with no luck. I started by pulling off my hood and laying it on a blanket. Planned out my attack by leaving all four sides of the hood skeleton in tact for some rigidity. Plugged in the trusty ol' dremel and started cutting away being careful to cut just the skeleton and not the hood itself. Quite a few cutting discs later, all the metal was cut and the only thing holding it on was the adhesive "dots". Pulling gentlly on the skeleton and scraping at the "dots" with a putty knife, the skeleton starts to free itself. Now, when I was pulling on the skeleton, my hood started popping like a bunch of cherries at an after-prom party, but never really dented. I finished it off by spray-painting the exposed metal from the cutting and also where the dots were. I will try to post an afterwards picture tomorrow. I weighed the part removed on a not-so-accurate bathroom scale at about 3.5-4lbs. So, in the end, not too much weight saved, looks kinda cool, cured my boredom, and it was free. Only downside is that I of course did lose some rigidity, so I gotta be careful no "well-fed" heffers sit on my hood.

dont know bout that hood specifically, but those bumps and wierd skeleton shape if you notice, makes the hood bend up and buckle if hit from the front. this prevents a flat hood from breaking loose and breaking the dash or windshield. its actually a safety thing. but seriously, post pics cause im interested, hehe.

Yes, there are places in the skeleton that are weaker than others to allow for crumpling, but by taking the entire skeleton off, I would contend that the hood crumples easier than ever, I can't see how he increased any danger.

orrr you could just buy my super light and safe full carbon sol hood in my sig
you can actually get up to 12lbs off the hood this way but you then need hood pins

seems like a lot of work just to save 3 or 4 pounds of weight. seems like that would make your hood so flimsy like aluminum foil. atleast it saved you from being bored.

actually thats what i thought till i read a post of a drag car with the same "modified" hood doing 130+ so i figured it was ok. tested today at highway speeds and no problem.

yea, only about 4 pounds, but i couldn't find a weight for just the skeleton so that is half the reason i did it, to find out how much it weighed. the del sol hood sheet metal seems to be thicker than a civic hood since my new "modified" hood still seems to be just as if not heavier than a stock civic hood. so it is still pretty rigid. i dunno.

Re: (POE)
i weighed myself, then i weighed myself holding the folded up piece of metal to get a more accurate reading and noticed just under a 4lb difference.

that seems like a lot of work to jus loose 4lbs, and In my own opion its not worth it but if thats what u want to do, go for it

Re: (POE)
^^really not too much work, just unbolting the hood and cutting some metal. would have gone even faster if I would have used an air-powered cut-off wheel instead of my dremel.
