DIY eg civic d15 timing belt
Hey Honda Forum Members,
I am new to this site and to doing things myself with my car. I was wondering if you guys think I should attempt to replace the water pump timing belt and tensioner on my eg civic. So far from what I read before i take the old belt off I need to find top dead center. I heard to put a screw driver or extension long piece in and turn the engine until it is at its highest point anyone can confirm this method? Also read that I should keep the slack on the same side as the tensioner. Is making sure the engine is TDC the only thing that is important before replacing the belt? I realize mistakes could lead to the engine being damage something about its a interference engine or something. Well thanks for everyones time hope I posted in the right section!

there's little marks on the crank pulley and cam gear but that metod is ok too just don't drop the thing down the tube hard. seems like you have the basic idea did you check out the DIY write up ?

On a properly running engine where i'm doing it just for preventive maintenance, I don't use the timing marks. I remove the covers then mark the cam and the crank gears along with the belt.
I mark each gear in a notch and the rib from the belt at the same time. Then remove the belt, transfer the marks to the new belt, and reinstall aligning the marks on the belt with the marks on the gears.

Re: DIY eg civic d15 timing belt
Ok yeah I googled a few posts here when I was not a member! But now I am so going to dig in deep. I requested off next Friday Saturday and Sunday next week haha! going to spend all day friday taking out all the things i need to to get to the belts and before removing the timing belt making sure its TDC or in proper placement then if its to late I will finish on saturday.
I read about the marks on the crank pulley and the cam gear and my car is properly running just has around 160,000 so really wanted to just change the timing belt I know the last owner changed all the other small things but he told me he did not do a timing belt yet. So if the marks on the crank pulley and cam gear are lined up that makes it TDC? or ok to remove and replace the timing belt?
I tried searching for the writes up on this haha i think I looking in the wrong place will double check! Thanks for the help guys!
