DIY 96-98 Civic Dome Light Fix After Installing Aftermarket Radio
Note: This dome light fix only applies to 96-98 Civics that had the stock keyless system.
OK I seen and read many people having this problem and none are very detail.
Here we go....
Tools
Wire strippers
Phillips screw drivers
Electrical Tape
First you want to take off the drive lower panel & lower center pane. Then pry the Hazard and Defrost buttons. There 2 screws Hiding remove them. Now unplug everything to the radio bezel. Don't forget the climate control cable.
If your radio can just pop out skip the first part.
Step two the fun stuff begins. There should be 3 plug on the radio harness from the car. It should be a green plug next to the radio harness white plug. One green in the back. Now on the green plug thats not taped down find the lite green/red and lite green/blk strip them and join them and tape them Shown below
Step 3 do everything in reverse order.
Now you fixed it dome light

"Behind your deck there is a green plug that you didn't use to wire up the deck.
If you jump the green with a black stripe and the green with the red stripe together the domelight will work"

Re: DIY 96-00 Civic Dome Light Fix After Installing Aftermarket Radio
on my 00 ex, there isn't a green harness, just the one for the radio and the climate control. i know i've posted this on other threads but keep thinkin maybe the right person will see it so here goes. when i bought the car a few months ago, the dome light worked with the door, the manual door lock switch, the keyless entry and the manual switch up by the light itself. somewhere in the last month or so, it has stopped working all together. bulb is good, fuse is good. the only things i've fooled with are the radio (the previous owner left 2 rca cables connected but just cut them an left them hanging) which i removed and the driver side window came off the track, so i had to pull the door panel to fix it. i just feel like it's somethin simple since it worked previously an i'm lookin for any tips to troubleshoot it.

this so called write-up works only for 96-98, the keyless entry is built into the radio but on 99-00 the unit is behind the kick panel so jumping wires is not necessary.

so, any clue wtf is goin on with mine? it really wouldn't bother me so much if it had NEVER worked. the fact it has pretty recently makes me think it's somethin ridiculous that i'm just over analyzing? do the keyless units have a tendency to go bad? should i get a volmeter and just check everything?

so wait, what happens to the dome light when you replace the radio? i have an aftermarket radio and the dome light works fine. is this due to the OE radio having something to do with the security/alarm system if so equipped?
though for the dome light, i noticed that after some time, the cover looses tension and the contacts become loose and the slide on the switch barely touches causing the dome light to be dim or not work at all.

You can buy a harness for around 15 bucks that plugs into the aftermarket deck and your OEM deck so your dome light will work and factory keyless entry.
I'm just not the type of guy that likes to butcher the factory harness so that would be the option I would go for.
This is the model for it.

However, you have to leave your factory radio there or you can tuck it somewhere. I'm sure theres people out there that would like to remove it completely. The keyless entry and domelight unit is hardwired into factory radio for the 96-98 Civics w/keyless entry.

What part of "Dome light stops working after installing aftermarket radio in a 96-98 Civic." is tripping you up?

I wasn't aware that power for the dome light goes through the dashboard. I thought it went from the ceiling down the drivers side pillar to the fusebox but I could be wrong.
The guide in this thread doesn't say why we should do those steps and why it fixes the problem and why the problem happened in the first place.

I just noticed this but shouldn't the title of this say 96-98 and not 96-00?
And you also don't have to take the whole damn bezel off to get to these wires. Ever.
