Default Distributor Rotor question...excuse the ignorance...

Alright, does anyone know how I can tell if my distributor rotor is worn out? How long is the contact on the rotor supposed to be?

Also, is that contact on the rotor supposed to touch the rods in the distributor cap, or not?

Trying to diagnose why my engine wont start...

Thanks.

A new cap and rotor cost like $20, just replace them?
