Default distributor help please!

okay well my distributor is no good on my d16z6 now i have and extra distributor laying around but the cap is broken! now can i swap the cap off the distributor on my car now with the one i have laying around? and if so any tips on how i put the new distributor on w/o missing with my timming. im not very experienced but i can get the job so i need someone to explain what not to do and what to do....

If they're both D-series distributors then just switch the cap (3 screws). As for the timing, normally I scribe a mark across the distributor mounting flange and the head where they meet, however this wont really help you if you're not putting the same distributor back on, you'll have to eyeball it and try to get it as close as you can to where the old distributor was, or ideally set the timing once you install the new distributor.

okay on the back side of the distributor the rotor i bealive does that line up with anything like i said this is something new to me!

On the back of the distributor there is a 2 pronged "cam" it mates with the camshaft on the engine, you can't get 180 degrees out as its slightly offset. The rotor is under the distributor cap.

Yeah, its pretty simple, I would recommend that you take the plug wires out off the spark plugs and leave them attached to the distributor cap, this way you can not screw up the firing order as the plug wires are only long enough to go to the correct cylinder.

hey does anyone know the tool i need to take the old distributor is it just a screw driver!

12mm wrench or socket.. and a phillips head screw driver...

yes you can swap caps
and btw you can also adjust the ignition timing
ive got a good friend who knows his ****
and set my distributor a few degrees forward (towards front bumper)
and it seemed to run alot better..

Yeah he advanced it... it'll run better on bottom end than top end.. It's always nice when your running your car from a dig..
