Default Distributor, which component controls RPM signal

Does anyone know which component in the distributor is responsible for sending the rpm info? Here is a thread with tear down pictures for reference.

http://civic-eg.com/viewtopic.php?p=223990

I got a new one as my old one was toast (distributor). The new/used one that I received has a good shaft, however my tach does not work now.

My vehicle is a 92 vx with the d15z1 engine and I'm using the stock distributor (TD-42U).

I was thinking that I could simply swap the electronics from one to the other, however if I didn't have to completely tear the entire thing apart then that would be great.

Igniter unit - blue wire to cluster. Test the blue wire.

I know the wiring is good. It worked great with the last distributor. I'll have to take a look at them and see which component is "tied" to the blue wire in the Dist. and then swap that component.

You can't rule it out until you test it.

You'll find diagrams showing the igniter unit in the FAQs sticky.

As Ron stated the igniter/ICM. It will look like one of these:

That's simply a waste of time to take the gauge cluster out to test the wire between there and the distributor plug when it literally sat there between installs for 2 days and it worked perfectly with the old dist. The only variable in the equation is the new distributor.

That unit is also responsible for sending the RPM signal to the cluster?

Well, you could be right, but you've really said nothing to rule out a broken tach wire or a poor connection in the connector. Good luck with the fix.

Thank you very much for the help! Both of you. I will likely get those swapped this evening and I'll post up my findings.

It was the igniter/ICM. It works perfect now. Thanks all for the help in finding the culprit electrical part.
