distributor.... is it the cap/rotor, ignitor or the dist itself?
96 civic auto
car keeps backfiring/misfiring ever since last week. It's gotten fairly bad.
yesterday the engine shut off while driving.
Before I rush out and get a new complete distrubutor, I would like to know if there is a way to test:
-ignitor
-test the actual distrubutor?
Because it would suck if I bought a cap/rotor and it still didn't work, it would be wasted money & I would need to buy a NEW DISTRIBUTOR.

Inspect the plugs, cap, and rotor for damage, corrosion, and wear.
Measure the resistance on the plug wires.
Remove both the coil and ICM from the distributor and have them tested at an auto parts store.
Check your mechanical timing to see whether the timing belt skipped a tooth.

dude, did you take the cap/rotor off to inspect? Did you check for sparks on each cable?

in the honda manual and haynes you can test the resistance on both the coil and igniter to determine what component is bad
