Disengaging VTEC... trouble?
If I disconnect the VTEC solenoid on my '92 VX so that the VTEC-E crap doesn't kick in, could this possibly hurt the motor long term?
The reason I ask is because the car runs stronger and doesn't bog/lag like F'ing crazy when the CEL comes on and the VTEC-E is bypassed.

Do what you want, its your car.
Is it a good idea, hell no you dumbass! Sorry couldnt think of anything simplier then that.
You dont like VTEC-E get another ******* car (maybe a swap )
If the CEL goes on then something is <FONT SIZE="3">WRONG</FONT> with the car. Think about it.

Re: Disengaging VTEC... trouble? (Luserkid)
I sort of gathered that there was a problem retard. The car's a piece of ****, the engine is powerless except when the CEL comes on. I can't diagnose the CEL because when I turn the car off the light doesn't come on again. It comes on at random, it'll go weeks on end without coming on, so whatever the problem is, it can't be that severe or the CEL would pop up immediately everytime. I'm also not interested in putting any money into repairing this car, I'm gonna drive the motor to death and then swap.
Your reply was amazingly worthless in everyway, I'm looking for mechanical/technical knowledge, not lamebrain remarks.

Im sorry, keep the CEL on the whole time. Im more then sure your butt dyno is pretty accurate, after all it is a BUTT DYNO! Nothing can beat that. Does it really matter if theres any problems in the end. The Butt dyno shows good numbers all across the board. Take off the VTEC-E the whole time. Im sure theres a wire to the ecu you could clip that would disconnect it. Also with this mod the butt dyno numbers would fly through the roof and no need for a swap. Do it!!!

Re: Disengaging VTEC... trouble? (Slow_Em1)
I'm not saying there's a massive gain in HP, I'm saying there's no lag, smoother throttle response, because it's not trying to engage the VTEC-E.

hi nooch welcome, i'm sorry you didn't get a warm welcome, ya if you just run it in 16 valve mode you will have more power all through the rpm range, and yes you can run a wire to do that, also your head is one of few oem honda heads with roller rockers, which means you could put a nasty cam in there, good luck

Re: Disengaging VTEC... trouble? (4g4drb17)
Thank you 4g4drb17, I've been visiting the board for some time now (Nov of last year) and used to be a regular back in 2000 (many cars back) when honda-tech had a much smaller community of members... But anyhow, could you be more specific as to how I could go about running this wire you mention.
I'd like to clarify that I'm not trying to make any sort of power whatsoever with this engine, it's clearly not ment for that with it's tiny intake system, cat/header setup, and horrible gear ratios. I'm simply tired of the massive bogging I get when accelerating in any gear at any speed.

splice the vtec wire, the green with white stripe on it, and add a constant 12v power source, hey when you ditch that moter i want the head i'm serious, i'll pay for shipping, i want to try a dremmel pnp on it before i do it to my z6 head and i want to try to install the roller rockers in my z6, i'll do i right up

First off I have an HX and I don't get any bogging in any gear. I bet the cel your throwing has something to do w/ the egr system. If it's malfunctioning then that might be what's up.
BTW you definately want the vtec to kick in. Have you seen the differences in the lobe sizes? I don't have my haynes handy but I do know that on the HX the primary (vtec-e) lobe is more aggressive that the y8's primary.

Hey, My b16 was doing the same thing, problem was harness was loose at the ecu, and the vtec was not finding a ground at the ecu as the result. hope this will help.

well this motor has some 140XXX miles on it, yours probably doesn't. i defenitely would like the VTEC-E to kick in if it were operating properly, but it's not, it's causing the engine to BOG big time, which kills acceleration.
Other symptoms are a real low idle at times, below 500rpm... I've got new plugs and wires, and intake filter is clear... any ideas? and also, the fuel gauge flunctuates quite a bit under harder acceleration and faster cornering speeds... probably totally unrelated but i was thinking that the fuel system might be the cause of the bogging, not sure. is the fluntuation in fuel level normal on such a old car?

Re: (Nooch)
in a green rubber holder under the glove box there is a plug w/ two wire pinned into it. connect these two wire together w/ a paper clip or wire or anything conductive. and get you codes from the flashing light. for more info on checking you check engine light do a search.

Re: (JMaxx)
way ahead of you....
let's say i'm driving around and throw the CEL. leaving the car running and jumping the wire won't do anything(as expected, i've tried it as a last resort). so i shut off the car, jump the wire, do the key dance (on-off-on-off-on) and get nothing because the ECU has been reset and it doesn't detect a problem any more. i've checked the backup fuse on the ecu (the one you pull to clear the code) and it's fine.
shutting the car off clears the code, is this normal? should it retain the code?
