Re: Disable power steering
Properly.. Not really. You can take the pump and reservoir out and loop the hose. You should look into a manual steering rack.

looping isn't a bad option. swapping in a manual rack would be ideal, but involves the most amount of work and money in comparison.
also you say "temporarily." what exactly do you mean by this? are you wanting to auto-cross for a weekend and go back to PS for the weekday commute, keep the car drivable while you save up to fix a leaky hose or failed pump, or still on the fence about wanting manual steering...?
looping can be reversed, but it's probably not something you would want to do over and over.

Re: Disable power steering
i just like how it felt in my old ej1, you can really "feel" the road i guess.
i just wanted to try it out for a week or so to see if i want to keep it out.

Re: Disable power steering
This applies to 96-00 civics.
I'm actually working on this as we speak, talk about a pain... the way the steering rack is positioned makes getting to it near impossible. Unless you were able to completely remove the rack, loop it and then put it back. This is on a 2000 ex, you literally have about 1in in all directions to try and fit a crescent wrench. Then you have to try and not round off the edges unscrewing the hose lines from the rack itself. I was trying to fit a visegrip or tiny pipe wrench into the space and you can barely get it in there, much less try to adjust or clamp it down once you get a grip.
My goal was to make it so that you couldn't see and remove all the lines from the pump back to the rack. I might have to just end up looping it in the engine bay somewhere. That or I'm going to have to man up and just completely pull the rack out, which is more work than I had originally wanted to do. If I was going to do that, then might as well just replace it with a manual rack and have it done right.

Re: Disable power steering
just take the belt off the pump and call it a day
no use removing things and possibly breaking hardlines (cause if its an EG, hardlines WILL be seized onto the nut) just to wanna put it back
removing the belt will give you a close feel of manual racks
a good amount of people dont like them cause they ARE a bitch to turn if the car is not moving (depends on pavement too)

Re: Disable power steering
Do a good job looping it and have an open system with a filter. It's better than getting a stock manual civic rack and subframe because the power steering rack is actually better than a manual rack on a turn-turn ratio.
The best option is to convert it to an electric power steering system with an Mr2 electric pump that runs off of your fuse box instead of as an engine belt accessory. Power steering is really nice when you need to get control of your car in a spinout on the track. With a manual rack you're subject to the forces of physics when it comes to car control. Power steering is a handy safety feature in that regard.

Re: Disable power steering
Loop the lines and run a reservoir.
Power Steering racks have a quicker LTL ratio.
If you were to get a manual rack, then you're suppose to use a manual subframe since they're different.

Re: Disable power steering
I ran my 98 without a belt for a few days, and decided it wasn't worth it, and put it back on. It was a bitch to turn. Even moving at 30-40, it was noticeably harder to turn the wheel after 1 rotation.
I was quite surprised. My friend 97 ex was very easy to turn, even when moving very slowly.
I don't know why mine was different.
His lines weren't looped, it was left open, not plugged or anything.

Re: Disable power steering
Until I have time to remove my rack, decided to just put the pump/reservoir back in and run it without a belt. Still pretty easy to turn on a 00ex coupe d16y8, but getting to and looping it is a major PITA. You can't do it easily without completely removing the rack, just simply isn't enough room to work. I'll do this later and take some pictures when I do, maybe give people an example of what to do with this year model.

Please tell me you are joking? Do you realize how much faster a track car is with power steering? The draw is minimal and the turning is quick, responsive, and precise. Also helps dampen the wheel for better endurance.

Re: Disable power steering
completely serious. the OP was asking about disabling PS. if his preference is manual steering a manual rack is ideal- fewer fail points, less weight, less complexity...
No, i don't. how much faster is it?
good points, but that's all pretty subjective and not universal. this debate thread shows that driver preference and chassis set up are what factor in to which system to use.
for instance, my 2300lb. civic (with little engine power to spare) is great with manual steering. no fatigue, no extra effort even at low speed. my 2900lb. accord (with a beefier torque curve and wider tires) would hardly be drivable without PS. my little sister on the other hand would have trouble driving the civic... so driver preference is a factor.

Re: Disable power steering
Yea, I'll eventually end up looping mine but for right now it'll just have to wait. Already have all the parts to loop it, just couldn't get a good position on the rack to unscrew the lines. On a 92-95 would be alot easier since they all screw into the top and not the backside like 96-00.
This is what the rack looks like on a 92-95 when converted.
