dirt inside muffler!?
i bought a used stock exhaust for my del sol but when i shake the muffler i hear something rattling inside. I know the previous owner probably kept everything outside and hasn't used it for at least a couple of months, but i was wondering if it is dirt or the pipes inside the muffler are broken.
also if its only dirt or something like that, if i were to put it on my car could i damage something?
thanks a lot!

If it's a metallic rattling then

If not it's probly the solidified exhaust soot and the muffler must be heavily used.
It doesn't matter, unless you have an exhaust leak.

I don't know if this is asking for a fireball of doom, but if it is soot and carbon buildup you may be able to pour some seaform or carb cleaner in there to loosen it all up.

just when you do, stay away with any open flame or lit cigarette. used carb cleaner in a stock 2002 civic si muffler and shot a flame about 4 feet long out of the piping. pretty fricken sweet, but will make you wet your pants if you arent expecting it. it was off the car by the way.
also, agree with the loose baffle inside the muffler.
