Default A Different Kind of Honda Build

Hey guys,

Just wanted to post up a something a bit different that we have done in the shop these past couple of weeks.

We had a special request from a local business, Ecstasy/Renegade Trikes, about possibly making a more economical version of his VERY unique V-8 powered Trike. So after some deliberating we came down to using a super basic Honda motor and auto tranny out of a 92-95 Civic. Cheap, easy to work on, and easy to find.

We just finished up the prototype mock-up a couple days ago, it was a bit rough but everything measured perfect, and off it went to get the body designed.

Once it comes back we are going to make the "pretty pieces" and clean everything up to make it production ready. Once we do that we will finish up the electrical and do all of the other things to make this thing road legal.

Check it out!

That's a really cool idea, I bet the light weight of the trike compared to a civic will make up for the lack of power in the D-series motor, and since its a D-series it will do great on gas, but i had a few questions, First, why did you guys decide to leave the frame so wide all the way up to the front? would it not make more sense to suck it in right after the motor and drive train so that you would be sitting on top of the frame like an actual bike, instead of in it. also witch motor did you go with? vtec or none vtec?

With the front that wide they might be trying to set it up to have a enclosed cab or more like a goldwing front with lots of buttons or cup holders and ac...

Looks like a lot of fun

That looks sweet! One heck of a large frame there.
You should convince them to boost it

To answer a few questions:

The frame is left wide like it is because it will be an enclosed cab. This is the "big brother" to the one we are building now.

We are using the D15b7 for now, but here is the cool thing... we all know Hondas are modular as far as engine swaps. So what we did to the trike is left it as modular as possible to accept engine swaps just like a Civic! What that means is we can run any other D-series motor OR with the help of the other t brackets and mounts we can run a B series motor too!

This thing will be right around 1400-1600 pounds fully loaded with two riders.

This thing will be finished for sure. It is going into production here in the next week or two. Everything is already patented and has all the appropriate copyrights were approved.

This thing is pretty neat and I will definitely post all of the progress. We are hoping to bring it to some of the Import shows around the country.

Thanks for the interest guys!

Not to bash your project (because it IS badass), but that design concerns me in that all your weight is at the rear of the vehicle, as well as all your power is transferred at the rear of the vehicle. With the right motor I could see this entire platform doing a back-flip.

Where the design you are emulating is mid-engined and wouldn't be as prone to this problem:

as opposed to

^Very true. Need some ballast weight or rotate the engine 90 degrees and move it forward. S2000 engine........yes!

You guys do raise VERY good points but I overlooked the fact that I know where everything is going to placed and what it will weigh and I forgot to share that with you guys.

After the stainless steel "tub" is in place and everything is laid out where the riders will sit, this will have a 53/47 weight distribution favoring the front. The weight distribution will substantial enough to prevent this thing from doing a back flip.

Now with all of that being said, technically it is all "theory" until we actually finish the prototype up and run it through its paces.

There were margins built it and alternative layouts and demensions built into the design to shift things around and not have to completely scrap the idea or do a complete redesign.

The trike is due back this upcoming week so stay tuned for all the upcoming progress!

Even the twin turbo 502 ramjet trike the shop has won't pull a wheelie . When everything is built this little 100hp automatic D15 won't have the power to pull the front wheel although it will be close to 1000lbs lighter than the Civic it came from.

What bike did that triple tree get pulled off of for the job? With the increased weight on the forks are you changing the oil or the internal springs to compensate?
