Differences in 1.6L D-series blocks....
Quick question - Im looking to pick up a 1.6L shortblock to build for a turbo application. Im using a z6 head up top and dropping it into my 97 coupe. I know smog will be an issue if I dont use a 97+ y8 block, but I dont need to smog my car in my town to renew registration. Are there any HUGE differences in the d16a6, d16z6, and d16y8 blocks? Im buying new rods and pistons; only re-using the crank. Thanks for the help....!!

Re: Differences in 1.6L D-series blocks.... (Rydaddy)
From personal experience I have found that the Y-series blocks to be weak ... they seem to suffer from oil-related bearing failures, both rod and main. I have had one Y8 with rod bearing failure, one with crank bearing failure, one with major oil consumption, but I have had zero bottom-end problems with my two Z6's
The Z6's seem much more robust. I am pretty sure that the Z6 and A6 blocks are the same ... the only difference appears to be the pistons. The Part numbers match up for the crank, rods, and bearings, but I have NOT been able to find out if the block castings are exactely the same ...
I hope this helps
Cheers

Thanks Moose......I know someone with 2 a6 blocks just sitting in their garage, but I turned them down because I thought they were different. Doesnt the a6 block have some oil squirters or something that the z6 and y8 blocks dont have (because of vtec, or lack thereof)? Or am I bass ackwards and totally trippin?
About dseries.org - my friend is having a hard time contacting the old site owner to get the original password. I guess you need certain info in order to switch carriers.

The Z6 does not have oil-squirters ... I think that is a B-series vtec thing (maybe H/F series as well)
I have not dissassembled an A6 yet so I have no idea what diffferences there may be ...
The one thing there may be is a oil control jet ... But I cannot remmeber if it is in the head or block (A6) ...If you do a search on Mini Me's you may find some more info (if any) on the diffferences between the A6 and Z6 Block
Cheers

the d series blocks other than the d16y7 block with no vtec have an oil control jet. Its one of the things you have to remove if you do an infomaous "mini-me" swap

Re: (turbotime)
So all the 1.6L D's are cast from the same mold? Im sure I can get 2 a6 blocks for the price of one y8, so I would love to use an a6 if there are no extra parts involved or LOTS of extra work. Can anyone tell me for sure befofre I go buy a few a6 blocks?
for all the help so far!!

Re: (Rydaddy)
The D16A6 and D16Z6 Appear to have the same block casting, the 96+ 1.6L d-series blocks appear to have a different casting ... BUT they share the same top portion where the head attaches.
I know you can bolt a Z6 head to a A6 block ... (A minime) as long as the oil-control jet is removed .... so that swap will work. And since there is no sensors other than the oil-pressure on the block it will be compatable with your harness.
So the A6 block may be a good option IF the price is right and the crank/bearings are in good shape.
Good Luck
