Default questions on exhaust??

heres the question... hopefully this doesnt sound dumb, but i have a 98 hx basically stock with a few bolt ons, but i would like to complete my exhaust, as of now i have only a muffler, but id like headers and a cat.. i need a cat for the main reason i live in PA and we have emissions here, so my question is, the stock cat is up right at the stock headers, if i replace the headers with say the dcsport headers or something, can i just put in a cat somewhere down the line??.. and would i benefit from buying an actual high flow cat, or could i just gut the insides out of the stock one?? or is that a bad idea?, im trying to save as much money as i can, so cheap is good...how would you guys do it??

Thats what i plan on doing. My bro in law has basic bolt ons and a high flow cat... and we in VA... Emissions almost completly screwed him over. he was 9 points away from failing and the dude came up to him afterwards and said "nice car, but next year you will prolly not be so lucky on passing since we just changed our filter 1 car in front of you".

I suggest just gut out a bit of stock cat. Unless u think u can pass.

you dont need to run a hi flow cat...you can run the stock one..putting a high flow cat on wont give you THAT much power gain over stock

alright.. well it just had a new cat put on about a year ago.. so maybe ill just remove some of the insides and get a header..

that should do it... any opinions on which header?? or are they all about the same? and what are the benefits between a 4-1 and a 4-2-1??

civictildeath.. im from plain old lebanon which is outside of hershey

You sir are dumb for even thinking about gutting your cat.

4-1 gives you more power up top
4-2-1 give you more power down low

And you're not going to gain that much from it. Trust me, I've rolled with both no cat, and a cat. The only difference was the smell of the exhaust fumes enveloping the car when I came to a stop.

Okay....

First off, headers only make a real difference at really high rpm. But if you have one, so be it.

For exhaust, think about the future.. It might be more $$ now, but might pay off in the end.

IMHO -If you want turbo somewhere down the line, think about a 2.5" or 3" stainless steel system.

If no turbo, then a high-flow cat will help you a little AS LONG AS the REST of your exhaust is the SAME diameter or bigger. Remember, the exhaust flows only as fast as the smallest part of your plumbing.

CARSOUND makes a great high-flow affordable cat that passes emissions (I live in NJ, I know about f'ing inspection...) - get the longest cat they make, and go with stainless steel for the rest of the plumbing. Its more $$ up front, but belive me once you have your setup, it will last a very long time

What are your future plans for the car? Swap? Turbo? All motor? If you tell us what your plans for the car are we can tell you what you'll need.

ps. I live not 5 minutes from you.

Ohh-Nnnnooo!!!!!!!!! Better not do that... you heard the man, it's ILLEGAL.

Hollow out the cat if you want maybe a pony or two. Did it in my buddy's 99 Si, he said he noticed a small power gain. I noticed a faint buzzing sound though. Probably reduces torque by a little, as there is less backpressure.

I'm sorry but I would rather have a car that doesnt smell like **** and doesnt deplete the ozone at alarming rates then a car that has .5 more horsepower.

actually for the time being.. i dont really have any plans for the car other then using it as a daily driver, im just trying to get the most out of it, while not having to sacrifice too much $$$.. if anything sometime next spring/summer id like to look into a swap of some sort and then perhaps in the long future throw a turbo on top of that.. but for the mean time im just trying to add a few more horses.

743.. where are you at exactly.. im trying to find other guys in the area who know more about these cars then myself and all my friends either drive lifted trucks or muscle cars... i dont want to be hated.. but my other car is a 88 mustang gt haha.. so my knowledge lies basically on muscle v8s

my 2000 hx has the cat intergrated into the manifold. So puting a header one wouod completely elimintate it. You could gut it, but you'd still be running through the restricive exhaust manifold.

Your options with a header are:

1. buy a high flow cat, or stock ex, and a catback for an ex
2. get a catback for a dx which should bolt right up to the header and run no cat. or custom exhaust from header back.

My recommendation to you is not to buy a header until you get your swap. If you know that your shooting for a swap somewhere down the line then theres no point in wasting money on a d series header when it wont work on your b series swap (assuming your going b series). If I were you I would concentrate on getting a nice 2 1/4 stainless exhaust made for you by a local exhaust/muffler shop. Then after you get your swap they can just cut some piping off and weld the cat on. I live in Annville.
