Do a quicky search. This was just covered. NO and NO2 are formed due to high combustion chamber temps and can also get past a bad catalyst in low numbers. A temporary fix is turning the timing back, but that can result in other problems with emissions. I don't think just running 87 will fix this as much as it might make it worse.

I've heard a lot of people adjusting their timing to pass in OR. I've never heard of using 87 octane, I was always told to use higher octane.
Are they using a sniffer? If so you could just run an alcohol mixture or some methonal. If you can get your car to run on it you will pass. I've never had a problem but every time I re-register I tell them I live outside of DEQ and they never argue with me. I've never had to run through even though I am technically supposed to.
