Default Did i get scammed?

Took my car into the local shop last week to have them put in a d15b motor. Now this is just for the motor, not the transmission..and it was *supposed* to cost $600 installed. I thought that sounded about right, so i left them with the car, and came to pick it up later. They gave me a run down of what all they did, and the grand total....$1,700 installed for a d15b to be installed..Now remember this is basically a long block, with the ECU and dizzy...

..I told them this is not what we agreed on, and that i did not have the finances to pay for it...the owner said we could work out a payment plan or something...but still...i dont want to pay 1,700 ******* dollars for a longblock d15...

If you weren't made aware of the charges you're not responsible to pay them.

also i think the law in the state of washington states that if you bring your car into a shop they can not do additional work to your car without your consent. the same law may apply there too, or every other state for that matter. that is a lot just to swap a long block and ecu.

yah, the problem is is that it was only a verbal agreement..we got nothing in writing...so i dont think there is much i can do..However the owner was willing to work out a payment schedual with me, and i guess i will just have to work to pay it off..Sucks, but i guess im kind of stuck doing it that way..

I talked to our local BBB and Attorney General, and I filed a complaint with them, and they will help Mediate the case, but they both said, since there is nothing in writing that i will probably end up paying for the motor, and then taking them to small claims later...so we will see what happens...

**NOTE**-To everyone...make sure to get everything in writing, otherwise you have nothing to back up your side of the case.

A verbal contract is still a binding contract. Take them to court.

A verbal contract is only binding IF another person witnessed it or was recorded, which neither happened.
I guess their off my list of shops to go to.

i would pay the original $600 and tell them to go **** themselves. they are really trying to rape you. i would tell them that u got a couple quotes from other garages and they were only charging $600 or $700. tell them if they want to take you to court go ahead. you might be able to bluff your way out of it.

Why didn't you get a couple of local H-T'ers and swap it yourself while learning something? Could've costed you a few cases of beer and a few pizzas. Come on now.

I will almost guarantee that the shop will say this:

$600.00 was the price for the engine NOT including installation.

I manage a shop here in GA, and I've got to tell you that we'd NEVER install an engine for just $600.00 - not even if you brought us the engine. Our labor rate for the swap is double the price that they quoted you for parts and labor. $71.00 an hour, and the labor rate book bills that swap at roughly 20 hours, which is what shops go by. 20 hours times $71.00 = $1,420.00 or so. That's labor only.

For those of you saying $1,700.00 is a rip-off, it's honestly not. Maybe from a shadetree mechanic it is, but it sounds fair to me. $600.00 for the engine and $1,100.00 for the labor, fluids, etc. is fair.

If you had shopped around at other established shops you'd have understood that $600.00 for the entire job, parts and labor, is ludicrous.

Then again if the shop told you it would only be $600.00 INSTALLED then that's ******* whack. Either you misheard them or they just blatantly decived you.

What is their hourly labor rate? How many hours did they quote for the swap?

ya scan the work order or somthing . let us know all the details as to whats going on . but bottom line if you were told one thing and thats not what happened , you got ripped off . but 1100 for a newer motor installed and for you to drive home with it is not that much . of course you can find a cheaper motor online , and of course you can pay some pot smoking wanna be honda know it all to throw it in for a 24 pack of bud . but if this was a legit shop and did a good job . then i wouldnt trip.

thats not that bad... i feel for you cuz you are stuck paying it but like tom said you should have shopped around a little more to see what other places would have charged and you probably would have gotten an idea that it was more

I thought so too. Thats how, and why mechanics make money, for doing the labor. You might be able to get a B16 swap for about 1700, but there is no way in hell you are going to get it for 1700 including installation.

EDIT - If anything seems a bit steep, it could be the price of that d15, seems like you could get a long block for much less by shopping the classifieds.

It sucks there was a misunderstanding, or unclear communication. Anyway, in the end, is the engine working well? That is whats important isn't it?
