Desperate for help- wallet inside jammed 1998 Civic DX glove box-latch won't open
Desperate for help- wallet inside jammed 1998 Civic DX glove box-latch won't open. Used WD40. Didn't help. Box won't open (no lock exists, just a latch).
I have no access to my driver's license, money, credit cards, ATM card, etc.
Thanks for all advice you can give. I'm at work all day (can't leave) and might be able to get a screwdriver.

LMAO use the screwdriver to pry it open. you might break the latch but they are cheap at the junk yard. does you glove box have a key for it? if so try the ignition key first. this is a lock for the valet guys so you give them the valet key and it only opens the driver door and the ignition. they cant open the trunk or the glove box if you lock them and give them the valet key. if there is no lock then you probably had a broken latch already. or a screw came out and something shifted and got it stuck

there is no lock (and therefore no key).
it's just a plastic latch and it's jammed shut.
any other advice?
thanks,
amy

screw driver that thing then LOL they get broken sometimes from people putting EVERYTHING in there and forcing it shut. or they sometimes just break from people not paying attention when the golvebox door is open and they break off part of the latch and it dont open again. gotta pry it open. you will most likely break it off and have to get a new door from a junk yard. or you may be able to just get the latch. its very easy to replace though. shouldnt be more that 5 bucks for the latch and 20 bucks for the whole door with the latch. where you from? maybe you can bring it by. i know you probably are from some where too far but i just thought i'd ask and maybe i can help you out LOL prying it open will be very easy though and as long as you dont rip the dash part you wont ever be able to tell you replaced the door if you pry it open carefully

there is a screw at both bottom corners of the glovebox. You should just be able to unscrew them and it might free the latch at the top.

Thanks everyone (including the LOL person).
I did unscrew the bottom and forced my hand into the box and got my wallet out. No, my glove box was nearly empty (not filled full of stuff). Just wallet/registration/a pen and a comb.
Anyway, the top latch part is still jammed and will not release so now the glove box is hanging from the latch that is stuck. More advice? Used a flat head for about 10 minutes trying to release the latch. NO luck.
I'm near San Francisco (or Palo Alto) and Honda Dealer will charge hundreds!
Thanks,
Amy

Just yank the latch and pull a new assembly from a pull-a-part. I'd be very dissapointed if you seriously took that to Honda.

I'd agree but she's a woman who was in a stressed environment losing her identity in her glove box. Heaven forbid a woman with no prior knowledge to Honda glove boxs puts a thread up stating as much.

Yeah give her a break. Not everyone is comfortable with breaking their car apart especially when they may not know where to get a replacement or how to do it. Amy if you have any friends or neighbors that are in any way mechanically inclined I would tell them your issue and see if they can help you, any guy (should) be able to break it open for you and possibly go with you to a junkyard to find another one.

Wow. Some of you guys were really sarcastic. I found my glove box door broken as I was leaving for work with $5.00 in my pocket and little gas and had to be at work in 1 hour with my ID, $, credit cards/ATM jammed into this non-opening glove compartment. I'm a teacher and standardized testing began this morning. It was a really bad start for me this morning. I would hope you'd receive kinder replies if you ever posted on some "women's work" kinda website for help...like sewing or cooking or diapering. LOL !! Anyway, please remember that most 48 year old women don't tear their cars apart and certainly don't know what to break if needed (clearly, I need to break this latch handle apart from the actual latch). What I don't want to do is break the actual glove box door...huge bummer for me. Closest junk yard is at least 50 miles from here...no experience in that arena. Thanks to everyone who has been kind and helpful.

NOOdS- you're funny. actually, I'm 25 on the inside (posted recent photo for y'all in my profile). the status is i broke down, went to honda. a tech took more than 10 brutal minutes with a screw driver trying to unhinge the latch. finally...so i ordered a new latch for 34.00 from the, gasp, dealer (less than a mile from my job) and it will arrive in 2 days and i can easily reinstall the latch and box myself.
thanks everyone.
