*****Dent in oil pan and need opinions*****
Hey
I just purchased a hatch like posted in sig and I had a question. My oil pan was pretty dented and I just order a new one from a fellow board member (thanks!) and I was looking at the inside of the new pan and noticed that the area around the oil pick up is very tight and on my current pan it is severely dented. I'm worried that the oil pick up might be messed up. The car currently runs fine and I've been driving it around even a bit spirited at times with no problems to report.
SOOOOOO....My question is are the oil pickups pretty sturdy or do you think i'll need to replace it? If so how much are they from the honda dealer on a d15b7? The space is just so tight around the pickup it makes me think that I'd have to bend it to get it back but then again hard to know without dropping the pan. The car is my daily driver so downtime MUST be minimal. Anything you guys can add would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well chances are that the oil pickup is fine. If it were dented it would not be supplying the pump with sufficient oil. Im pretty sure the pickup if fine though, just drop your old oil pan and inspect it, if it looks damaged they go at the dealer for about 20 bucks.

Re: (H9Omega)
My oil pan is dented from the previous owner I believe. Mine is like dented near the front and not far enough back and centered to have damaged the oil pick up...at least I hope so. Just check out your oil pick up when switching pans, if it looks ok, then I'd say it's fine.

Well i'm not wondering if it's bad or not. I can find it out when I pull the pan. I'm trying to avoid downtime with the car if I pull it and find out it's bad and have to wait on parts. I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and what happened?

You mean the clearance around the pickup, bulb to baffle? Its supposed to be fairly tight on d-series. B-series pans have a windage tray and very little baffling around the pickup.
As long as you have enough room directly under the pickup (inlet to pan bottom), you'll be fine. Assuming you aren't low on oil, the pump/pickup won't cavitate.

if money isn't a problem, then to minimize your down time, I'd just get a new pump, pick-up, and pan and do it all at once. I would guess that it isn't broken b/c you obviously have oil pressure. Any way for the guy to manually check the pressure? Any check points?

It just looks like the area where the baffle should be is bumped out where it should be but everything around it is smashed in and im worried i'm going to pull it off and have the pickup all busted up even though it seemed to keep its shape. I mean everything around it is pushed in a decent amount further so i'm thinking it might have been bent to the point it won't fit in the new pan or be damaged.

I have a d15 pickup tube you can have if you send me 7.00 to ship it and cover paypal. I will even clean it up for you. Priority mail be there in 3 days.
You will need to replace the pickup tube gasket though as it is the most important gasket only 2nd to the head gasket.
Although I do believe you will be fine.

i would order the pan and pick up.. you know you going to use the pan so worst case you waste a few bucks on the pick up.. if its not damaged no point in replacing it .. drop the pan if pick up is good slap a new pan and pan gasket on it you be on your way.. just have to move the headers out the way.. the pan have lots of screw. a air ratchet will help you save a hour.. just put air on real low (no torque) when putting them back in they will break.. even a electric drill just to spin them once you got them loose helps... they have about 20 of them..

You have to drop the exhaust manifold and the flywheel cover and a couple brackets to access the 2 or 4 nuts on the tranny side of oil pan as well.
