Del Sol Unstable when top is off, Any help?
I just bought my del sol and it has stock suspension.... when the top is off it seems wobbly or unstable but when the top is on it's fine. i know its because the top makes it stronger but does anyone know how to fix it so it does do that when the top is off?

It's called cowl shake and most any car without a roof will have it. There is no fixing it as nothing is broke.

That's great, and would have been useful if we were talking about a Supra. Different cars will respond different to losing the top half of the unibody. Almost all will have some form of cowl shake, some worse than others. After owning a few Del Sol's and rode in others I can say the car has bad cowl shake when the roof is off the car and is a normal trait.

I own a Del Sol, and the car doesn't shake like he's describing, what's your point?
Sounds like some serious placebo affect going on.

You dont notice your delsol flexing because you dont know what to look for. Try holding the windshield while driving and hit a few bumps youll see what they are refering to.

I would hardly describe something that requires holding the windshield and driving over bumps as "unstable" as the original poster did

And we are also going on someones opinion and first impressions of driving a Del Sol. I'm sure it's not as bad as people are playing this out to be.

To the OP:
Define "wobbly."
Define "unstable."
Like others have said, if you're referring to cowl shake going over bumps and stuff, there's nothing to fix as there is nothing wrong with your Del Sol. If you're referring to aerodynamic instability (ie. on the freeway) I suggest you slow down when you have the top off!

same here. only way to fix it is to strengthen the chassis(rollbars). Damn S2000 have that fancy X-bracing so they dont have this prob.

roll bar i guess??????
thats the only thing that i can think of. b/c **** your taking off some of the reinforcement of the car when the top is off.

Read first before you post - you said(paraphrased) "it happens to all cars with removable roofs"
The concept of the toyota supra's targa top and the del sol's targa top is the same. My point was simple, it rejects his saying that it happens to all cars wtih removalable roofs. My friend has a Supra, it ISN'T unstable when the top is off.
So stick it.

1. bolt on cage/reinforcement bars(safety 21 and thats what i just installed)
2. custom cage(big bux)
3. custom x brace (underneath the floor but not enough space)
4. chassis foam (messy but i heard well worth it)

What are you talking about? The above statement would be like me saying; "I used to have a 92 MR2 and it sure as hell didn't shake when the top was off." It has no relevance to the OP. All that does is establish that some cars supposedly shake and others don't.
I think the OP was posting this to get the opinions of other sol owners to see if they had the same problem and if there was an easy fix, not if this were normal for targa vehicles. No matter what you say, the supra and every other targa vehicle are gonna be slightly less stable and a bit more squirrelly with the top off.

Your a dipshit. Supra targas have cowl shake just the same as a Del sol. Look on Supra Forums if you don't believe me. They even make targa braces for high power cars to keep the cars from flexing.
Riding your friends nuts for his bias uneducated opinion does nothing to contribute to the thread, it just makes your post as stupid as the rest you post here because you don't include facts in any of them. You just run your mouth.
The original posters car is not unstable, he just has never been in a targa top car and is feeling normal cowl shake. And like I said before, most every car will have it in some form or another some worse than others.
So you sir can stick it.
