Default Del Sol Swap...

I want to swap out the D16 in my 93 Sol with a B16, but I am not sure which is a better route: B16A2 or A3

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

A2 and A3 are basically the same motor.
If you are getting a US B16 motor, go with the B16a2.

BTW ....JDM motor are all called B16a

I agree, plus the b16a2 will probably have less miles.

JDM sir-2's have 10 more hp than usdm....

and most JDM motors only have 40-45k miles because of the strict laws they have in japan. i guess people are taxed after so many miles on their car.

Here's a question: I'd read the the JDM motors were rated at a higher brake HP because of the higher octane fuel availabe in japan, and since we can't get that kind of fuel here, the engine output will be similar to that of a USDM engine. Can anyone verify this?

that could indeed be true. I don't know the specifics on a JDM vs a USDM motor (eg: cam specs, head differences, etc). If it's a different exh. manifold/exhaust design, then things like that can be made up with a proper aftermarket system.

But in the end, really.. what's 10hp? that's LESS than .1 off the 1/4 mile, and even less when the dyno is done at the flywheel. 10hp at the flywheel is splitting hairs.

As for the higher octane yielding more hp... I could see that happening if the JDM motors had a more aggressive timing curve and fuel map (read: tuning).

B16a3's intake manifold flows better than the b16a2's and JDM motors tend to have 10 more hp because of the higher compression. Most JDM motors will have about .4 more compression than the USDM counterparts. I.E the B18C-R vs the B18C5. B18C5 is 10.6:1 and the B18C-R is 11:1.
