Default Del Sol Steering Problem (clunking)

I have a '93 Del Sol Si w/ a VX motor in it. The VX motor does not have a provision for power steering so my Sol has been running on a power steering rack with no fluid for well over a year. I just got this car last week and have noticed a definite "clunkiness" to the steering. The wheel is tight and the car tracks correctly (all aligned) but it seems disconnected I guess from the wheel. Just sloppy feeling and makes some noise. At first I thought it was possibly bushings or tie rod ends but now I'm starting to think the power steering rack is to blame for this. Anyone got any insight to this? I'd appreciate any help guys.

Also, will a EG manual rack be a direct bolt in affair on my Sol? I could opt for this instead of repairing or messing with my power steering rack. Just LMK if you got some advice.
