Default Del Sol GAS MILEAGE ISSUES (25 mpg) :( PLEASE HELP

Hi all. its great to see so many knowledgeable people on here.

I just bought a del soul and i have some issues with its mileage. its a '93 1.6 si auto model vin says jhmzh626? i dunno if its a vtech. engine has 145K kms on it

I recently got its timing belt changed, spark plugs, wires, pcv valve, distributor cap,air filter, fuel filter.

last time it did 430KMs/tank,40liters. city driving. no harsh speeds.which is 25mpg

I heard a lot of people get 30mpg and 550-600kms out of their del sols!.

do i have to replace the 02 sensor?. my mechanic said dont waste money it wont help cuz the engine is burning oil pistons are dirty. he looked at spark plugs and there were hints of carbon deposits on them but i just changed them 1000kms ago

can someone tell me whats wrong? i'm getting frustrated. already spent money! i dont wanna rebuild the engine.

I was going through the same thing on my 2000 Civic, except my car does not burn any oil... It ended up being my O2 sensors. I replaced the original tired ones with Bosch, which helped zero. Then I got wise and bought some Denso O2s and now my mileage is back up in the 30s. Figure out if you are actually burning oil and why first though, and fix that before you get new O2 sensors, or they will just get ruined right quick.

Is the ignition timing set to spec?

I got the same car.
I would do a compression check just to get baselined.
If adding a little oil to a low cylinder improves the compression maybe your rings are worn.
If the oil doesn't improve the compression maybe a valve adjustment is needed.
Check your air filter make sure it's clean.
The IAC and FITV valves should be clean (See FAQ's)
25 mpg in city traffic may not be too bad. Do you have a lead foot off every traffic light?

hey thanks for the replies guys.

mine doesnt have a/c and i been driving normally just to try to see how well it does on a full tank.
according to fueleconomy.gov auto delsol 93 only does 23mpg mixed driving!. thats pretty bad considering weight of this car
I don't know how people are claiming 35mpg 40mpg on forums!??. did they modify ecu or something??

when i did oil change engine was cold maybe thats why the new oil so dark? maybe it mixed with old oil.
anyway, the car has lots of power especially with higher octane gas and supreme really makes it go!.

i don't know about engine timing. it could be the oxygen sensor. luckily it only takes one sensor. ill go with denso after i save up some cash.
but first i was thinking of putting engine restorer with engine oil, maybe itll help clean the pistons?.
i just dont have any cash to do all the compression testing etc.

thanks.

I wouldn't use any engine restorer (Rislone/whatever) it will deteriorate your engine seals especially rear main and you will have oil leaks like crazy. Do a couple of frequent oil changes to get ahead of the sludge.

I routinely get in the low 30mpg in my 95 S auto and I drive about 80% of the time in the city. There are times when I drop below 30mpg, but not often enough to get too concerned. When mpg starts to drop, I make sure the air filter isn't dirty and put a can of BG 44K in the gas tank. That usually does the trick.

My oil is changed every 3-4months regardless of the mileage because I drive less than 10k each year.

I am getting 30-33 mpg and i have a 100% bone stock sohc. I did change the sensor and fuel injectors along with the routine maintance and oil. My best numbers are 318 MILES to the tank I will push it a bit further this next tank just dont want to run out of fuel.

Depends on how and where you drive. My M/T 98 civic was getting about 25 mpg in ALL city driving with the A/C on. This is in the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles where traffic and red lights are everywhere. It was rare that I got to get into 5th gear.

yes m/t supposed to be good on gas and you guys have a/c running. i dont have a/c.

i drive short distances few times a day and there are some hilly streets in city. someone said that could be reason you see low numbers. my mechanic said stop throwing money at it.
but i'm just too paranoid about o2 sensor etc. because some of you changed your sensors and got good results:D
