New to this forum, and i need some help figuring out what turbo is good.
I have a 93 del sol with the d16z6 engine. am i better off getting my d-series turboed, or going for a swap? i kno there are some d-series beasts out there. Im tryin to spend $2000 or maybe more. i want to get as much hp as i can, but i dont want my car at the shop every other day. any suggestions on a turbo set up? thanks

Yeah I agree on the swap, with 2 grand i understand you could get a turbo kit and make good power, but just think you could have a b series swap for that, then you could either go turbo on that or build it all motor. Start on a better platform to begin with, the d series isnt the best motor, and yes it can make power but its still a single cam, only so much power can be made.

This is my 2 cents but i think you would be happer with a swap then a turbo'd d series.

i'd stick with your d-series, i have a d series and want to turbo it, imo it's pointless to do a swap, b/c after the money you spend, you could have built a turbo d series with a nice turbo.

and about power, there is a d16 making 568whp, so b series do not make necessarily more power,

unless your looking for over 700hp don't go d series, but if your comfortable with anywhere from 200-400, i'd say stick with your d

you are kinda right and kinda wrong... yes there are d series pushing over 300 whp, but as far as I know, all of them are on c16 race fuel. Undesirable at 6 bucks a gallon LOL. With an stock h series turbo'd you can do over 350whp safely on 93 octane. (I did 366 @ 9psi for 2 years) and built h22 will do 450 on 93. I have nothing against d series, but I wouldn't stay with it unless I was one of those SOHC lover types, and im not. I am a fan of fast on pump gas. LOL Speed and power is addictive, and unless you "grow" out of it, it will always tempt you to change things around. Don't make the same mistakes I did.

1st setup
d16z6 All motor- ported and polished head, intake manifold, header + every single bolt on imaginable... $2000

2nd setup
same as first + NOS wet kit.... $500

3rd setup
d16z6 greddy turbo kit... $1250

4th setup
JDM H22A Swap+ new totally different turbo setup... $3000 (and that was a steal!)

5th setup
JDM H22A built + yet another totally different turbo setup... $4500 (and that was even a bigger steal LOL)

Total that **** up to my 5th setup (the one I am finally happy with) and you will realize that had I cut out all of the bs and saved some money for just a little bit, i could have had this setup together 4 years ago...

Ultimately, it's your call I can't tell you which way is better because only you know what your final goal is, but you are best off to think about that goal first before you start chucking money around

i dunno .. i know i am looking for 300whp max on pump gas for my d seires .. i dont htink more than that would be fun for the street .. 250 i would think would be satisfying .. so i don't feel the need to spend all that extra cash on a swap .. if i already had a b or h series .. it would be a different story

i'm not saying i prefer a d series, but for what you can get out of it .. i dont think its necessary to swap unless you are really looking for crazy numbers on pump gas like you said

Thanks for all your suggestions. Im looking at a couple of engine swaps, and it looks like a lot of people are happy with a Gsr swap. Im sure that people love the h-series swap too, but from what i hear, its alot more trouble getting it in.

well I can relate to this situation because im asking myself the same thing. the way i look at it is: there are not so many decent, clean, strongly built turbo d's out there. so its way more respectable when you can pull 400hp out of a single cammer rather than the gsr or LS swap that everyone else does. dare to be different. im gonna try it.
