Default del Sol build, need help choosing!

OK, i just sold my b16 hatch for about 4700 cash...

now, i'm gonna go look at a del Sol today, d16y7 motor with y8 head that's been ported and polished...this will probably set me back about 2800-3000...

now, the car looks fairly nice and has good paint and no dents...my choice lies in the motor...

i have an LS bottom end i bought a long time ago for 400 dollars, it has CTR pistons and a 9 pound flywheel. The problem lies in the fact that i don't have a trans or a cylinder head.

i'll have about 1700 cash left over, so here are my options...

1. buy a trans and a stock cylinder head, slap together an LS/Vtec, and make between 155-175whp
2. turbo the **** out of the d16, probably afford to get it tuned...

i am not looking to skimp on anything, and i want to get a tune...
unfortunately, the LS/Vtec seems to be least cost-effective for only 155-175 whp...

so my questions are:

1. could i make more power with the d16 turbo setup?
2. which is more "bang for the buck"?
3. if one or the other, how could i do either for 1700 dollars?

also, if i sold the short block, a hytech header, and a carbon fiber hatch for an eg, i'd probably have an extra 1200-1400 to spend...
i've seen some all-motor ls/vtecs and some turbo d16s on the net, but the d16s seem to make more power...for me, it's not a question of if i like NA more than forced-induction...
i've done both, and i have no specific preference as to either...i've never turboed a d16, though...i do see more of a potential for easy horsepower with turbo...

i'd also like to have some money left over for some stock del Sol seats and some taillights...

I'd have to agree with you and the turbo. I think it would be more bang for your buck and if the d16 you're getting withit hasnnt been beat on I think you would probably be able to get it on the road faster too. So i'd say go for turbo.

cool...also, i've got the price down on the car to 2600

now, is it realistic to get a stock del sol Si over the 200whp mark with 2800 dollars? in a good state of tune?

also, i'd like to use hondata as my tuning system of choice...
so, if this budget is realistic, approximately how much power can i make with it?
what turbo would fit the bill best?
and, what type of BOV and wastegate would be good, but not super expensive?

i think you should go for the ls wait till the funds replenish then boost the ls so much more power and potential just a thought

i'm not gonna have more money for a while, i'm a full-time student and i don't have work right now. it's the damn economy...

anyway, i want to get the cost of everything knocked out in one go...
so...i've decided to turbo the single cam...

i need some answers from people with experience with my choice...

I have a d16z6 prepped for turbo. Its got a complete rebuild on it, including a comp cam, ported and polished head, hot tanked, block decked and honed, arp head studs, eagle forged rods, vitara 9:1 pistons, and assembly all for $900. I'm just waiting for the funds so I can put together a turbo set up. I've looked into it and a decent "junkyard" turbo set up would be $800. Piecing it together myself. Going with a T3/T4. I'm hoping to make 250whp.

Hope this helps you go with a turbo

i appreciate the offer, man, but i'd rather put the motor together myself...
thanks, though...

as for people still telling me that i should save up money, not an option...i'm not gonna magically get money, and interest rates aren't all that spectacular now, due to the economy...

i've been doing some research on turbos tonight, and i have a question...
i've pretty much decided on a 16g turbo for this build...what size exhaust would be good for this build?
i've identified the manifold and the turbo, i need to get on the Bay(ebay) and find an intercooler kit for a del sol and also some downpiping.
so, the question remains...what's a good blow-off valve? and, also, i plan on getting 260-275 out of this setup because i don't want to sleeve this motor...so, who makes some good forged rods that aren't godawful expensive? also, i'm gonna price some vitaras...

Ha man sorry to make it sound like I was trying to sell it to you. I was just trying to tell you what I paid for mine, and what I had. Thought it would help.

gotrice, the idea here is that these questions you are asking can't truly be answered in a paragraph.. although you want everything right this instant, do more research and delve into what YOU truly want to accomplish. Im at the same point where im trying to make decisions and it all boils down to funds; invest in the smartest way that best suits your needs. the only way to do so is to take your time.. looking for deals and piecing together used turbo parts is probably your best bet, and especially in this current economy like you said

thanks, both of you guys...

i'm making a list of prices for different things...
i'm doing the base prices for all new parts, like a new mani and a new 16g...
right now, i'm at about 1000 without a downpipe, exhaust system, or hondata...

i'm using the issue of Project Car where they turbo the CRX...

so, am i going to have to get an exhaust shop to make me a downpipe? i haven't seen any premade ones..do i just give the 16g downpipe flange to the shop and have them fab a downpipe and set up straight piping to the muffler?

i'm not quite sure what muffler i'm gonna use...also, i'm gonna price rods and pistons...

all right, i finished the list...look over it and see if i missed anything...
oh, and i also found the downpipe i'll use...it needs a td05 flange welded on the end, but will fit perfect.

manifold: $105
16g turbo: $265
intercooler and piping $190
blow off valve: $160
walbro pump: $100
440cc injectors: $202
downpipe: $ 75
pistons, rods, rebuild: $770
hondata s100: $100
boost controller: $340
cometic head gasket: $ 85
arp head studs: $120

TOTAL: $2512

note: all brand-new parts. Can hopefully find used parts for much cheaper in the future.
reliable up to 275whp

anything i miss? i don't think i included oil line, and i'm not sure if hondata s100 will get the job done or not...will it? is datalogging really important for this setup?
also, i didn't include honing the cylinders at the machine shop...how much might that cost?

i also don't mean to be asking n00b questions, but the previous turbo car i owned was not modified by me, i just drove it as is for a while...so, i'm learning a lot about turbo systems...
