Dealer will pay 2k for my civic, is this a good deal or not...details
Details:
Honda Civic DX 1999 automatic, about 122k miles, body in good condition except passenger door dent (does not affect opening and closing door).
Dealer says I have damaged at least 3 rods and says a rebuild would be about 3800 or a new parts rebuild about 7800. Since I do not really have the tools yet and experience to perform a rebuild should I take the 2k offer and be done with it and put that towards a a used honda manual? Or would I get more if I tried listing it on the for sale forums?
Thanks

Why not just get a good used engine for it? I don't understand what they're going to do for 3800 let alone for 7800!!!! Search the classifieds for your engine to see how cheap you can get one for (i.e. D16Y7)
Also, check http://www.kbb.com/ for the real value of your car.

Also check with local tuner shops too. There are plenty of people getting b-series swaps that don't want their old d16. I'm sure you can get a shop to damn near give you a D16Y7.

Thanks for the info thus far. It seemed pretty low.
I will do some checking with local tuner shops to see what engines they have available and maybe go that route. That does seem a better option.

Dealers will always shaft you on trade-ins, it's as sure a thing as the law of gravity. I wanted to trade in my Accord a while ago, Honda dealer offered me $3000 less for trade in than the VW dealer, and said there was no way they could budge on price.
Repairs for $3800? $7800? What a joke! A new crate motor doesn't even cost that. Damaged rods??? How could they possibly know that? And how would you possibly have damaged them on a stock automatic DX??? I would never do any business with crooks like that, not buy parts, not get service, not even buy a car there.

well with KBB value... with a custom rating... its trade in at 3,800...
And they are right... Unless he took the engine apart, pulled out the rods, and then put it back together.. he doesnt know jack about the car's engine... DO NOT do buisness with them.
Repair it or sell privately.
