Default 1996 Civic DX Hatchback, auto-manual swap + vtec

I picked up a 96 dx hatch auto, I needed a car fast and ended up with a nice, well taken care of hatch. The only thing is it has 168xxx or something and that's nothing for the motor but the auto transmission is another story. This question has probably been asked many times but what is required to convert to a manual transmission for my 96 dx hatch. I know I'll need a transmission, shift linkage, but from there the shifter and interior, etc, wiring, I'm not exactly sure of.

also as a side note, I noticed I have a non-vtec D16Y7, what all is involved in swapping to a D16Y8, I'm assuming just the head and the wiring the for vtec solenoid, and ecu.

I guess I just can't keep a normal car, have to go fast and have some fun =]. That and I'd plan old rather have a manual than an auto. The auto is just lame, but for 106hp it's surprising able to chrip 2nd gear with an auto. Neat. As another side note, I come from the integra family (generation 2), have done extensive B18 work, and LS/VTEC builds, so maybe if it's worth the torque maybe a B18A1 swap. But I really am trying to keep it simple for now.

A good friend of mine, who is a full time mechanic, is taking on a similar project on a 93 DX hatch. Auto to manual, D15 to D16Y6 swap. I helped him tear apart a 5-speed 94 EX to obtain parts for the conversion. I don't want to scare you but it is a MASSIVE project to convert to manual shift. EKs don't have as much latent stuff as the EGs (example: an auto EG has a spot to mount a clutch master cylinder, I don't know if EKs do or not) so eyeball the chassis carefully to see what you have to work with. I'm not sure if you have to but my friend says he has to use the spinal cord from the ECU all the way behind the dash to the gauge cluster to get the damn working. As far as the VTEC part, it shouldn't be to hard to find info on the net to figure out how to make it work.
