DC 1 Piece Header on D16y7
Does anyone know if a header designed for an d16y8 will bolt right up to a d16y7 exhaust system?
I've read the archived posts on the subject, but I'm interested to know if the header overall length is such that it will bolt right up to the existing HB exhaust if I run without a cat. Please, no comments on running w/o a cat.

LOL... I know... looking to free up a bit more power/torque so it will be able to get out of it's own way.

Why not?? Primary o2 sensor will be in the header and still functional. Secondary does not affect drivability, just the CEL light.
Back to my original question... length wise, will it just bolt up right to the existing exhaust?

Yes it will bolt right up to your mid pipe and you will throw a CEL for the 2ndary o2 sensor. I don't recommend running on the street without a cat though. Sounds horrible at 3 grand.

They are the same length. The length of the mid-pipe is what the difference is. On DX/CX/LX/HX the mid-pipe is longer than on the EX/Si because there is no need for the space underneath the car for the cat.

Thank you. That is the answer I was looking for. I don't intend to leave it w/o a cat, but wanted to know in advance if the header would bolt up right away to prevent down time on the car. Plan to add an ex cat onto the midpipe at a later date.
Sounds like you've played with different exhaust configurations... will the dc header mate to the midpipe using the same doughnut gasket or does it require something different?

I run a DC on my D16y7, don't miss the cat, however had to add an 18" resonator, and might add another it's loud, goes straight back to an universal Skunk2 muffler.... I left the O2 sensor plugged in and hanging in the engine bay, never had a check engine light, tried an O2 simulator and started getting a check engine light..... runs pretty good thou

I assume you're talking about the secondary o2, right? Primary is mounted on the header?

Yeah, I covered my secondary o2 with tin foil and it didn't throw a CEL for a month or two. I only did this because I didn't want the 2nd o2 bung in my kamikaze header not ot be plugged.
If you only have one o2 bung, just let the 2ndary hang.

thanks for the info guys.
for those that have added an aftermarket header to a d16y7, was it worth it? did you notice some change in your engine power output? if so, how?

I mean, the car "felt" better, yeah.. the stock exhaust and manifold really chokes it up alot. But its nothing huge. Alot of it is just HEARING the difference makes you THINK you're faster, haha. But anyways, without a cat your car is gonna sound raspy - trust me. So get a resonated test pipe or something when you get a chance.
If you have a nearly stock y7, the biggest improvement you can make, trust me, is the EX tranny. It'll make the car 1000x more fun to drive.
Also, an EX intake manifold helps alot, too. The DX one is very poorly designed.. better yet, a complete EX head will help alot.

I am planning to add an ex cat a bit later, but for now it will run with just the header. not looking for big gains but just to help the engine breathe a bit as it needs all the help it can get.
I'm looking at doing the y8 IM, too... looks like a cheap, easy upgrade. Bit by bit, piece by piece, it'll come together. have you done this mod?
and you're right... the gearing on this car is too the moon.... I can see where shorter gears would help... a lot.
thanks for your input.

Yeah, I've done it. I actually had a spare y8 manifold, but I gave it to my buddy for his future D series build.
I'd save for that tranny for the next mod, trust me, it makes all the difference in the world.

sorry, a little OT, but just curious. are all D-series headers interchangable? Will they bolt onto the head without a problem, and clear the block and oil pan? I found a Kamikaze header off a ZC that I am looking to pick up for my D16Y7, and was wondering if it'll fit... I plan to do some custom exhaust piping work, and to mount a cat right after the header...

what year ex tranny will work? only ones from ek's or all ex d series?
I found one from a 95 ex... would that work? also, is the gearing different between the 2 generations?
what's a fair price to pay for a trans?

Can anyone answer my questions? I have the tranny lined up, ready to buy, but need to know if this will work.
thanks

Yes, all 92+ SOHC transmissions will work fine. An EX/SI tranny (same thing) from 92-95 will be just as good as a 96-00 EX transmission. Either way is good, as long as the transmission has no grinds and super high mileage should be avoided.
The ex tranny you are talking about will be a great improvement. Make sure to ask about mileage and grinds.. if its in good condition, with not a ton of miles, and no grinds.. offer him $125 at first, and see what he says, then go from there.

Yes, it should fit, but...
A kamikaze header is designed to be used with a blower. If you don't have a supercharger, or aren't spraying, I would not recommend kamikaze. I had one, and it made my car feel flat.... sucked/

Thank you!! I'll get back w/ the guy and ask the q's you suggest. He is says he doen't know what the condition is as they bought the tranny and engine and ended up only swapping the engine... or so he says. He's asking $100 for the trans, so I may just buy it as a leaning tool, if in fact it turns out to have problems. At the very least I'll learn how to do a tranny swap.
Thanks... you were very instrumental in the decision to search out this mod. Mahalo!!
